Manufacturing Engineering

Our apprenticeships involve a fair amount of academic work. For that reason, we'll need you to either possess or be on track to receive the qualifications listed below, or their equivalents:

  • A-Level - Grades A* to B in Maths, Physics or Chemistry and one other
  • GCSE - Grades A* to C intermediate 1 A or 2 A-C in Maths (Higher paper), English Language, a relevant Science or Technical subject, excluding Combined Science

Alternatives qualifications:

  • SQA Higher National Diploma
  • Scottish Highers in Maths and Physics (Band A-C)
  • Key/Functional Skills level 3
  • SVQ and NVQs at Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5
  • BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in an Engineering related subject, including Further Maths - Merit
  • HNC/HND/SQA Professional Development Award in an engineering subject.

Enthusiasm for engineering
Beyond your academic qualifications, we'll be looking for evidence that you're genuinely enthusiastic about developing a career in engineering. For instance, we'd like to hear about how you tinker with cars, bicycles or motorbikes; or about an engineering project you've done at school, or an engineering club you've been involved with. Whatever it is, we need to know you've thought things through and are fairly sure that this career is right for you.

Analytical and motivated
You'll be analytical, methodical and good at solving problems, as well as articulate, driven and a fast learner. We'll also ask you to tell us about times where you’ve shown motivation outside of academia – for example in playing sports, learning languages, organising a significant event or taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Team skills
We're also very keen to take on people who love working as a team. Because, despite the size of our company, we all enjoy working as part of a close-knit team. So, we'll be interested in how you've worked in a group. That could be at school, with your family, in a sports team, at work, in voluntary organisations, such as the Guides, Scouts or Cadets, or as part of religious or community activities. You'll also need to be good at organising your time, as you'll need to make time for studying, as well as actually getting on and doing your job.
