Rolls-Royce propulsion solutions: Ready to deliver the speed, endurance, thrust, and electrical power capacity for every CCA mission

In 2023, the U.S. Air Force announced a plan to procure 1,000 Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) starting in the late 2020s, as part of its Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) Family of Systems. As envisioned by service leaders, CCA will lead to loyal wingman drones flying alongside fighters and bombers, a force multiplier that will be the airpower backbone of America’s future military.

Meeting CCA’s ambitious requirement – including an unrefueled range exceeding 3,000 nautical miles, advanced payload adaptability, and the ability to operate from short runways will require innovative propulsion solutions.

For decades, Rolls-Royce engines have powered military operations around the world, providing the power to support all the combinations of capabilities our customers need, without compromise. Rolls-Royce brings together proven propulsions solutions and a legacy of engineering excellence with transformational digital design and manufacturing capabilities to enable agility and innovation, ready to scale to meet the needs of every mission.

We have the speed, endurance, thrust, and electrical power capacity to shape the future of air dominance.

COMMON CORE VERSATILITY

Rolls-Royce engines and technology have proudly supported the U.S. military for more than 80 years, powering aircraft for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and a variety of military and civilian aircraft in service around the world.

Utilizing common core engine architecture and technologies that can be rapidly scaled and adapted and tailored for multiple applications, we provide unparalleled versatility for our customers.

For example, the Rolls-Royce AE engine family is a cost-effective, one-of-a-kind product line that has enabled countless missions globally and continues to deliver robust reliability. No other engine line in the world has such a broad and diverse set of applications with global impact in both the commercial and military markets. As the only military engine line with turbofan, turboprop, and turboshaft variants, the AE engine family is the military’s most versatile powerplant.

Each AE engine comes from one optimized assembly line in Indianapolis, Indiana, enabling remarkable efficiencies in manufacturing processes. Rolls-Royce recently made a $1 billion investment in modernizing our Indianapolis facilities to deliver innovation and advanced manufacturing to our customers with American labor.

A TRANSFORMATIONAL APPROACH

We take a transformational approach to new engine development and are poised to deliver capability to our customers faster - reducing costs and accelerating time to market.

At the heart of this approach is the Orpheus engine family, a concept we developed to deliver advanced, low-cost power capability for the uncrewed and small engine market with a wide thrust and power range and embedded electrical power generation.

Founded on the principles of creating a family of affordable, twin-spool small engines, Orpheus will provide pioneering capability solutions for a broad range of future Defence markets by utilising common engine architectures and technologies that can be rapidly scaled, adapted and tailored for multiple applications.

Through the adoption of agile working practices and underpinned by a rapid-make supply chain, we have developed the capability to learn fast through doing, across a fully empowered and aligned engineering team.

By utilizing novel approaches such as additive manufacturing, we have accelerated engine development times by up to 50 percent and manufactured lighter weight and more functionally optimized components. This helps accelerate system development and customers can benefit from a product that delivers more power with less fuel.

Built on our legacy of engineering excellence, Rolls-Royce is ready to power the next generation of autonomous aircraft for the U.S. Air Force.
