TP400-D6

The TP400-D6 brings together tried and tested technologies, blending the very best experience from existing commercial (Civil) and Defence (Military) gas turbine products.

As the most powerful Turboprop engine currently in production, TP400-D6 delivers 11,000 shaft horsepower.  Features include advanced aerodynamic and component design, low fuel burn and weight, efficiency over a wide operating range from extended low-level flight to high-speed cruise and integrated engine and propeller control.

A Powerful Consortium

The TP400-D6 turboprop was pioneered by Europrop International GmbH, a European consortium consisting of Rolls-Royce, IPT, MTU Aero Engines and Safran Aircraft Engines, formed specifically to design, develop, manufacture and support the power for the Airbus A400M Military Transport aircraft.

As a partner of Europrop International, Rolls-Royce is responsible for:

  • Overall engine performance
  • Air and oil systems
  • Intermediate casing
  • 6-stage high pressure compressor
  • Hot Strut module
  • Low pressure shaft

The TP400-D6 delivers:

  • Power range in excess of 11,000 shp generating thrust levels capable of short runway take-off and landing
  • Certified for operation on “unpaved runways” ideal for sand and dust environments
  • Low risk design
  • Combines the very best of European aerospace expertise

The Europrop International consortium has been contracted to develop and produce more than 750 engines for the A400M fleets, serving a global customer base that includes Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey, Belgium and Luxembourg.  Malaysia became the first export customer (four aircraft) and additional engines have also been produced for further potential export customers.

Supporting a Sustainable Future

From inception, the TP400-D6 engine was the first military product to be Civil Certified by EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency), ensuring compliance with recognised civil aviation standards regarding noise and emissions.

The low fuel consumption of the TP400-D6 engine allows A400M military transport aircraft to operate for 4,800 nautical miles enabling extended round-trip sorties. Interchangeable modules on the TP400-D6 provide engine availability for operational support and efficiency for all maintenance activities.

As with the wider civil aviation industry, significant efforts are being made to introduce Sustainable Air Fuels (SAF) for military products. In the UK, we are working with industry partners and the Royal Air Force to explore technical and certification pathways to operating defence platforms on 100% SAF. An example being in November 2022, Rolls-Royce, in collaboration with UK Government and industry achieved the world’s first 100% SAF flight on a wide bodied military aircraft, RAF Voyager. The TP400-D6 is also a viable engine that will support exploration of a potential crossover learning of low carbon engineering and technology between Civil and Defence applications. The experience from our civil business will help Rolls-Royce support the ambitious decarbonisation strategies of our customers.

Digital Innovation for Greater Efficiency

Over the past decade, the digital revolution has been transforming the way we work at Rolls-Royce. The TP400-D6 programme has already broken new ground with novel in-service technologies which we have helped to develop:

Microsoft HoloLens video

This form of Augmented Reality (AR) allows an operator to overlay virtual models onto the real world, through use of AR headsets or glasses, effectively supporting the fitting of external systems for TP400-D6. The HoloLens kit locks on to a physical TP400-D6 engine, allowing the operator to work through a menu and select the relevant Harness, Fuel, Oil or Air pipe system and overlay a virtual model on top of the real engine highlighting the system of interest.  The technical publications can also be displayed within the augmented environment, leaving the operator’s hands free to handle tools and work faster in a reduced risk environment.

Turbine Gas Turbine System - Test Unit

Cutting edge test equipment which injects broadband signals into engine sensors to confirm functionality preventing unnecessary replacement of equipment to reduce time and money.

Power Gearbox Vibration Measurement Kit

Deployable on-wing test equipment meeting urgent operational needs of A400M customers. The measurement kit uses commercial off-the-shelf portable monitoring technology and helps prioritise Power Gearbox exchanges based on a perceived health index.
