An Engine for Growth

An engine for growth for the UK economy and proud partner to the UK’s armed forces

The UK has a once in a generation opportunity to deliver a step-change in growth, resilience, prosperity and security through Government backing of the country’s highly differentiated sovereign capabilities in aero-engine and nuclear technology. As the UK’s aerospace and nuclear champion Rolls-Royce is that engine for growth, uniquely placed to lead this national endeavour for our country.

Stronger, more resilient UK aerospace and nuclear sectors are vital for the nation’s national and economic security, and they are essential for the security of our allies. Decisions taken now to invest and grow the UK’s sovereign aerospace and nuclear capabilities have enormous potential to drive UK growth, skills and jobs over the next few decades.

Securing sovereign Aero Technology

The UK’s position as a world leading engine provider is not guaranteed. We need to stay at the leading edge of technology development to secure the freedom to support the UK’s armed forces, NATO and other allies, in an increasingly uncertain world and reap the economic benefits, skills and jobs from growth in the civil aviation market. This requires Government and industry working together to exploit civil and defence technology synergies that will make the UK competitive globally over the next few decades.

Powering growth and prosperity

We wholeheartedly agree with the UK Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan that gas turbine technology is critical to national and economic security, and “the single biggest opportunity in aerospace over the next 50 years is to secure a UK engine position on next generation single aisle programmes”. Our UltraFan technology demonstrator programme positions us strongly for the next generation of aircraft, whether single aisle – also known as narrowbody – or widebody.

Securing Sovereign Nuclear Technology

Through Rolls-Royce, the UK can again be a leader in nuclear technologies. The recent announcement by Great British Energy - Nuclear that Rolls-Royce SMR has been successful at the end of a two-year selection process to assess leading SMR technologies from around the world, is a very significant milestone. It means the UK’s next generation of nuclear power stations will be designed and built by a British company, creating thousands of jobs, boosting the supply chain and creating growth for the domestic economy. We look forward to working with the UK Government to deliver this opportunity. We also will work with Government to seize the next opportunity: Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) where we have unique homegrown capability.

The UK Government’s Industrial Strategy shows long-term strategic foresight

  • It clearly recognises that Aerospace and Nuclear are frontier industries that can drive growth, deliver skilled jobs and increase UK exports.
  • In Aerospace, we wholeheartedly agree with Government that gas turbine technology is critical to national and economic security, and “the single biggest opportunity in aerospace over the next 50 years is to secure a UK engine position on next generation single aisle programmes”.
  • We welcome the Government’s commitment to the vital research which will help to keep the UK’s aerospace industry at the forefront of innovation, through the extension of the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) programme to 2035.
  • The UK’s combat air capabilities are singled out by the Government as a growth-driving sector, and Rolls-Royce will continue to protect the UK and its allies.
  • We will work with Government to realise their ambition to promote the country’s advantage in strategic, dual-use technologies to strengthen our defence industrial base and drive growth.
  • In Nuclear, the UK Government has backed Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) “for European deployment”. We agree with the Government that “SMRs are an emerging industry, where the UK has the potential to take the lead.”
  • We will work with Government to seize the next opportunity in nuclear: Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) where we have unique homegrown capability.

Our collective ambitions are clear. Now the strategy must be implemented at pace. There is enormous potential to drive growth, exports, skills and jobs.

UK growth, prosperity, resilience and security

will only be achieved if the UK has a strong industrial base, energy security, access to markets and retains its freedom to operate.

At Rolls-Royce, we stand ready to work with all our home nations to unlock these benefits and secure growth and security for many decades to come.
