Our Nuclear Skills Academy

UK’s submarines programme

Derby became the home to the first Nuclear Skills Academy for defence in September 2022, opening its doors to its first cohort of 200 new apprentices. It aims to invest in the nuclear experts of the future and sustain nuclear capability within the UK’s submarines programme by creating a dedicated pipeline of talent at the start of their careers.

The Nuclear Skills Academy has the funding to provide 200 apprentices each year for a decade, with nuclear education and hands-on experience across four different courses. The support of key industry, academic and governmental organisations in driving the project forward has been invaluable for Rolls-Royce.

The apprenticeships are spread across five courses

Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprenticeship
Nuclear Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship
Nuclear Business management Degree Apprenticeship
Nuclear Engineering Technician Higher Degree Apprenticeship
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Engineering Degree Apprenticeship

University of Derby and endorsed by the National College for Nuclear

They provide fully funded, further and higher education qualifications, while the apprentices receive hands-on practical work experience within the business. That means debt-free qualifications, invaluable industry experience for the CV and the likelihood of a permanent role at the end.

Each of the courses are awarded by the University of Derby and endorsed by the National College for Nuclear.
