Practical Apprenticeship

Electrical Engineer
Our plants make use of a vast array of technology, most of which involves some kind of electronic activity. Our Electrical Engineers are responsible for looking after these aspects, so they install, maintain, check, refurbish and repair a variety of equipment.

Our apprentices here become electrical experts and are trained in everything from repairing general breakdowns and defects, to installing a new plant using conduits, pyro, wire armoured cable and panel wiring. They also learn how to strip down and refurbish all sorts and sizes of motors, repair lighting fixtures, take switches to pieces, examine control circuits and use meters to measure voltage and current.

Instrument Fitter
When you're building machinery as complex and important as our engines, it's imperative that our instrumentation provides accurate measurements at all times. This is the responsibility of our Instrumentation teams, who install, maintain and calibrate equipment and repair defects in any electronic equipment we have on site. This could be anything from CCTV systems, to chemical analysis equipment, to our control systems. As an apprentice here, you'll learn to deal with absolutely everything to do with the complicated instrumentation we use.

Machinist
Generally working to rotational shift patterns, our Machinists are responsible for manufacturing a range of components using a variety of methods and machines. This means interpreting engineering drawings, so you'll also be trained to work to a fine degree of accuracy using both manual and electronic measuring instruments. Among other skills, you'll learn turning, milling and grinding. And you’ll also get to grips with computer numerically controlled machines as well as hand-operated equipment.

Mechanical Fitter
Our Mechanical Fitters get involved in a range of activities. On any given day, they could be making sure steam turbines or high and low-pressure steam systems are working to the highest standards. Equally, they could be inspecting hydraulics, constructing pipe work or manufacturing one-off components. Or they could be turning their hand to any one of our on-site systems, such as the heating and ventilation in our buildings. In what is an extremely varied role, you'll be trained to deal with all the hands-on mechanical activities on our sites.

Mechatronics Engineer
Mechatronics Engineers mechanically and electronically maintain and service a range of machine tools. Working in shifts, they deal with various internal manufacturing and assembly departments, delivering scheduled and planned maintenance operations, responding to machine tool breakdowns and getting involved in a continuous Total Productive Maintenance Programme. The nature of the role means you'll learn practically everything about how each of our state-of-the-art machines works.

Toolmaker
This team designs and makes a variety of precision tools which are used in the production of our components. This includes wax pattern dies and fixtures as well as the tools themselves. These experts also advise on and influence the design of tooling, both inside Rolls-Royce and with some of our suppliers.

As an apprentice here, you'll learn a variety of skills, including designing and making dies, fixtures and gauges for turbine blade production, as well as modifying them to meet different needs. You'll also be machining and shaping a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, wood, resins, fibreglass and fillers, so you'll develop a huge breadth of machining and fitting skills.
