Million milestone for the efficiency leader

Million milestone for the efficiency leader

The most powerful version of the world’s most efficient engine in service today – the Trent XWB-97 – has now accumulated a million engine flying hours.

The Trent XWB-97 exclusively powers the Airbus A350-1000 and contributes to the aircraft’s 25 per cent lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft. The engine will also power Airbus' new freighter, the A350F.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for the industry, but the Trent XWB-97 powered A350-1000 has continued to remain a popular choice, with utilisation at higher than pre-pandemic levels - which has been key in achieving this milestone.

Incredible reliability

Incredible reliability

The Trent XWB-97 is as reliable as it is efficient delivering 99.9% dispatch reliability since its entry into service in 2018. The Trent XWB is one of the most reliable engines ever produced and has delivered a step change in out-of-the-box reliability for the industry.

Long-haul flights to short hops

Long-haul flights to short hops

There are now almost 60 aircraft in service across six operators who are taking advantage of the aircraft and engine’s versatility and capability. They’re flying a range of different routes, from short-range hops – such as Sydney to Canberra, Australia which takes just 45 minutes – to ultra-long-range flights of 18 hours. This long-range capability means airlines can open new direct non-stop routes such as Hong Kong to Washington, United States offering passengers comfort and convenience whilst saving time.

Looking ahead

The launch of the A350F has provided an exciting opportunity. Iain Dudley, Head of Marketing for the Trent XWB, said: “The aircraft is versatile, fuel efficient, and capable of carrying large amounts of cargo around the world – the engine plays an important part in that. It’s little wonder this winning combination will go on powering the most efficient and sustainable freighter aircraft on the market.”

“Achieving one million flying hours is a proud moment," said Alexis Vidal, Airbus' VP Marketing for Widebody Aircraft. "We set out with Rolls-Royce to deliver game-changing efficiency with the A350-1000 and Trent XWB-97. This winning combination continues to prove itself every hour with proven efficiency, demonstrated reliability, and extraordinary versatility.”
