Powering electric commuter aircraft

Electric machine prototypes in a new power class tested

On our path to a more sustainable aviation future, electrifying commuter aircraft with up to 19 seats, suitable for passenger travel and cargo transport over short distances, is a next big step.

At Rolls-Royce, we develop the technology to power these aircraft: complete electric systems, from energy storage, power generation and power distribution to the control of our own range of electric propulsion motors.

Our latest achievement on the road to product has been the design, assembly and lab test of two innovative electric machine prototypes developed to meet the requirements of this aircraft class: a 500 kW electric motor with a high torque-to-weight ratio, and a highly efficient and compact 500 kW generator.

Learning from these lab prototypes will get our Commuter aircraft programme one step closer to delivering its mission: helping a new, sustainable way of travel take off.
