Rolls-Royce Powers INS Mahendragiri

  • Rolls-Royce powers newly commissioned INS Mahendragiri with four mtu 12V 396 TE54 sets
  • Rolls-Royce’s mtu solutions also powers INS Agray and INS Dunagiri commissioned by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on 21 June 2026
  • This marks a significant milestone in India’s Naval modernisation and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR., ADR: RYCEY) today announced that four mtu 12V 396 TE54 generator sets have been installed on INS Mahendragiri, the sixth indigenous Nilgiri-class stealth frigate commissioned by the Indian Navy. The commissioning ceremony was led by the Honourable Defence Minister of India, Shri Rajnath Singh at Visakhapatnam on 11 July 2026.


INS Mahendragiri, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, features over 75% indigenous content, advanced stealth technology, and modern weapons and sensors. The ship is equipped with four Rolls-Royce’s mtu 12V 396 TE54 generator sets, each providing 1 MW of reliable electrical power to support complex operational requirements and ensure high mission availability. (C) Rolls-Royce JPG

This is in continuation of the momentum where earlier, on 21 June 2026, the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, presided over the commissioning of three Indian Naval ships. Of these, INS Agray and INS Dunagiri are also powered by Rolls-Royce’s mtu solutions. INS Agray, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) of the Arnala Class, is propelled by three mtu 20V 4000 M93L, enabling a maximum speed of 25 knots and providing superior manoeuvrability in shallow waters. INS Dunagiri, like INS Mahendragiri, is a Nilgiri-class stealth guided missile frigate, and is equipped with four mtu 12V 396 TE54 generator sets.

The Nilgiri-class frigates represent a new generation of multi-mission stealth guided-missile warships, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) for the Indian Navy and the commissioning of INS Mahendragiri is a significant milestone in India’s Naval modernization.
