Rolls-Royce Defence nearing launch of new digital services

Rolls-Royce Defence is currently in the demonstration phase for a suite of digital service products to better support our customers.

Launched under the Rolls-Royce IntelligentEngine™ vision, the first of these services to be released are a Foreign Object Damage Prevention (FOD) service and Corrosion Prevention Service.  These new services demonstrate how we are focused on supporting our customers and the sustainment problems they face.

Rolls-Royce Defence has been at the forefront of digital services in aviation for more than 20 years and continued digitalization plays a vital role in bringing this vision to life.

FOD Prevention Services

FOD Prevention Services

Rolls-Royce’s Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention system uses the latest digital tools to revolutionize the aerospace industry’s approach to FOD management, empowering airfield operators to make informed operational decisions to reduce the likelihood of future FOD damage incidents.

The service replaces paper-based reporting processes and creates a rich database of information that can be used to optimize FOD prevention activities, track the effectiveness of FOD equipment and policies over time and provide a searchable record of missing tools and materials.

Designed for both civil and military airfields, the system consists of a mobile app connected to an analytics website with the capability to connect additional sensors in the future. The app replaces burdensome, paper-based manual reporting processes by providing an intuitive, digital tool to report debris found on airfields. Key information about the debris are captured in a system designed to support existing FOD prevention activities. Data from the app is uploaded to a secure cloud, where it can be accessed from a dedicated website to generate dashboards, heat maps and customizable reports which track key metrics such as debris concentration by area and items reported against time.

Alongside digital offerings, Rolls-Royce provide dedicated FOD Specialists who help identify the root causes of FOD, train airfield personnel in best practice, advise on policy changes, recommend equipment and manage the operation of the digital FOD prevention system at customer airfields.

Key benefits:

  • Reduce paperwork burden by digitizing FOD data.
  • Identify FOD hotspot areas to focus remediation activities.
  • Use data to assess and optimize the efficacy of FOD prevention efforts.
  • Capture and search for information on missing tools and materials.
  • Integrate with standard FOD processes such as FOD walks and sweeps.
  • Provide data-driven insights to support infrastructure improvements.

Corrosion Prevention Service

Corrosion Prevention Service

Our Rolls-Royce Corrosion Prevention Service offers asset managers a quick and easily accessible single platform to monitor the preservation effectiveness of high value assets in storage containers.  The system monitors specific environmental condition-based parameters, to include temperature and humidity indications, of stored assets in differing locations. This cyber secure platform allows the customer to both monitor assets on an ongoing basis, and to react to proactive alerts when the system detects humidity that exceeds the defined environmental limits. These monitored trends and alerts allow a customer to identify and rectify situations when they occur rather than at the next scheduled asset preservation check, saving the customer from corroding an asset and a high cost corrosion incident. The continuously monitored trends also allow for potential reduction in manpower requirements, as the visual inspections can now be monitored electronically.

Additionally, Rolls-Royce will offer a premium service that will include not only our Corrosion Prevention Service but will also allow for the physical tracking of an asset, along with a version that provides an accelerometer function for monitoring the physical condition of an asset during transport.

Key Benefits:

  • Easily integrates into existing asset preservation processes for all OEMs, any preserved asset
  • Increased effectiveness of current Corrosion Prevention activities
  • Identification of humidity exceedances when they occur
  • Reduced manpower requirement for physical humidity indication checks
  • Provide data-driven insights to support preservation infrastructure improvements

These new innovative digital products continue pioneering the way Rolls-Royce provides services to our customers, with engines and services that are increasingly connected, contextually aware and comprehending – more intelligent.
