A greener solution

Rolls-Royce Marine offers a wide range of environmentally friendly solution for the RoPax and Explorer Cruise Vessel market. Battery electric and battery hybrid systems for marine propulsion are today`s solution for reducing or eliminating emissions. At a system level the battery can absorb rapid changes in load and allow the power management system to run the optimal number of engines at a more constant higher load, resulting in reduced emissions.

Learn how a LNG engine solved the port power dilemma for one Spanish ferry operator. By installing a gas-powered generator set on deck in its own enclosure, supplied with gas from a 30m3 gas tank, the company saved £565k per year.

One system, one provider

Our offerings for the RoPax market range from highly efficient integrated propeller and rudder solutions for propulsion, a variety of azimuth propulsion propellers, as well as side thrusters for enhanced manoeuvrability. In addition we provide diesel or pure LNG-engines and battery systems for spinning reserve, load smoothing or zero emission operations. Power systems range from medium voltage or low voltage AC distribution systems to DC systems allowing variable speed engines. Our system integration design means we can make optimal solutions when it comes to energy consumption and emission reduction. We offer our own design combined with our systems integration to offer the optimal solution.

Digitalisation through extended monitoring and control provides new service possibilities like equipment health management, energy management and remote access. Auto-crossing and auto docking are developed for adaptive optimisation of passages. With a unified user interface the operator will experience easier operation and clear presentation of information.

New technology

Energy Management

Energy Management helps improve crew’s awareness of their ship’s performance, supports environmental compliance, and can assist customers to reduce energy usage, fuel consumption and operating costs. It offers an enhanced ability to improve the performance of an individual vessel or an entire fleet. The system provides details on fuel consumption and overall energy efficiency levels benchmarked against historical performance, allowing the crew to exploit opportunities to minimise fuel usage and cut emissions.

Our customers can select various modules most relevant for their vessels and operating profiles. Popular for our RoPax customers is the 'Electrical Balance' module for example, which ensures full control of how the ship's energy is consumed in situ.

Intelligent awareness

Intelligent Awareness system /IA) is a sophisticated situational system that fuses multiple sensors with intelligent software to mitigate against safety risks navigators face when operating vessels at night, in adverse weather conditions, or in congested waterways. The software enable officers to visually detect objects that would otherwise have been colaked by the blackness of night, creating a safer passage for RoPax ferries and Explorer Cruise Vessels.

Elegance POD

RoPax ferries, cruise ships and expedition vessels are the target market for the new ELegance pod series that operates in the 1.5MW to 7MW power range. It provide propulsion units for precise and efficient vessel operation. It has a built in permanent magnet electric motor for optimal efficiency over a large speed range, combined with an excellent hydrodynamic design developed by the well renowned Rolls-Royce Hydrodynamic Research Centre. With a well-proven and durable electric steering arrangement, a clean and exact steering of the units with minimal energy use can be provided. A new integrated hullfitting interface allows a compact head-box to be used, minimizing the hull drag and improving hull efficiency.

Bergen 36:45 engine

The Bergen B36:45 model is designed in accordance with the Rolls-Royce philosophy of a common platform for all fuel options and applications, and can be configured to meet the specific engine requirements of customers. The engines have world-class low fuel - and lubricating oil consumption as well as no smoke emission. It shows exceptionally low emissions of NOx, CO2, SOx and particulate, and it is possible to convert to liquid fuel operation.

Azipull PM

The Azipull-PM has an L-drive configuration with geared drive with right angle bevel gears in both the steerable underwater part. A vertical shaft permanent magnet (PM) motor is integrated into the upper unit. The PM motor maintains a very high efficiency over a wide speed range. Combined with the proven high propulsive and hydrodynamic efficiency of the Azipull this is a winning combination, especially as there is a further small gain in mechanical efficiency by eliminating the upper gearbox. Space requirements in the thruster room are reduced because the new thruster is compact, the PM motor lying within the diameter of the mounting flange giving a small footprint and avoiding the complication of a coupling and foundations for the separate motor of a conventional Z or C drive electric configuration.
