Being included, being at our best, being Rolls-Royce

What makes you, you?

Being a parent, best friend, or carer? Being a runner, a TV binger or a dog lover? Being an engineer, a fitter, a buyer or a leader? How about being an innovator, a survivor or a believer? There’s only one you. Different to everyone else, but somehow the same. Rolls-Royce is unique too. And that’s because of our people.

Let’s make a place where we all feel included.

To achieve our big ambitions –to pioneer the power that matters; to connect, power and protect our world; to lead the transition to net zero – we need you to be at your best.

When we’re all included, we’re all at our best for each other, our business and our customers.

That’s what Being Rolls-Royce is all about.

Inclusion starts with how we all treat each other every day

The way we behave each day can make people around us feel included or excluded.

That’s why we’re all expected to:

  • live up to our values and behaviours
  • value the diversity in us all
  • make sure everyone feels include
  • take steps to accommodate different needs
  • treat each other with dignity and respect
  • never tolerate bullying, harassment, or unfair discrimination of any kind, by anyone.

Our leaders and managers are also expected to:

  • actively build an inclusive culture and demonstrate inclusive behaviours
  • ensure all team members are treated equally, fairly and are included
  • recruit and develop our people on merit, irrespective of their diversity.

Understanding Inclusion at Rolls-Royce

What makes us different can unite us and be a cause for celebration. Recognising that we all have different characteristics, lived experiences and perspectives is important because it gives us greater strength as a team – we will be more innovative, more understanding, and gain more knowledge. It also enables us all to be more inclusive.

Our differences, however, can sometimes lead people to act in a discriminatory way. Some communities are at greater risk of being actively discriminated against than others and, in some cases, the discrimination takes place more widely within society. At the other end of the spectrum, discrimination can take place at an implicit or unconscious level. Everyone carries biases and blind spots, based on everything we’ve seen, heard, or experienced in our own lives. We must ensure we don’t discriminate, unconsciously or otherwise.

So, when we think about inclusion, look at the whole person. What is it that makes them, them. Celebrate the uniqueness of us all, but be mindful of the unique challenges that we all also face.

Our Inclusion Strategy – creating a more inclusive business around the world

We’re creating an inclusive workplace where we’re all able to be at our best.

Our Global Inclusion Framework supports our Care Promise and is underpinned by our Global Policies.

The Iceberg model

To be truly inclusive, it’s important that we don’t just consider what we can see – many of the characteristics that make each of us unique aren’t actually visible. Because many of our traits are hidden, we can’t always know what the impact of our words and actions may be on someone else. The Iceberg Model is a good way of demonstrating this.
