Powered by gas
Maritime industry regulators who are demanding that new vessels must in future meet and beat stricter emissions targets have already signalled operational trends.
The need for customers to improve their environmental credentials, while still maintaining competitiveness through cost-effective solutions, is leading to research in and the use of cleaner energy sources. Rolls-Royce is now offering a range of natural gas powered propulsion systems that deliver both good economy and much improved environmental performance.
Our gas-powered propulsion systems have inherently lower fuel consumption than those based on diesel or dual-fuel engines. Our lean-burn gas engines reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxides by 30 and 90 per cent, respectively, and virtually eliminate those of sulphur oxides and particulates.
Compared with dual fuel engines, gas engines have a higher gas fuel tolerance; have no potential ‘switch-over’ problems, no additional processing equipment and no waste oil, all of which result in reduced maintenance.
For short-range engines such as tugs, smaller gas tanks, oriented vertically, can be installed to maximise space for larger, more powerful engines that can then be linked directly to azimuthing thrusters for responsive manoeuvring.
All gas system solutions come with our Acon automation system which, as well as managing all regular vessel automation tasks, also handles gas monitoring, control and alarms to ensure both safe and efficient operations
