Engines for tugs and Workboats

Tugs have to be tough and reliable and Rolls-Royce consistently endows vessels with these vital attributes through our Bergen range of efficient diesel and gas engines, which today span 1,460 to 8,000 kilowatts (kW).

Our knowledge and experience is backed by 60 years as a supplier of high-quality reciprocating engines.  During this time, we have consistently pursued a philosophy of high power, low fuel consumption, and simple and reliable operation.

Today’s Bergen engines are manufactured to the strictest quality standards and are capable of handling shock loads under all conditions, and at all speeds.  Every current engine also meets latest International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Tier II requirements for environmental performance, while our gas engines are designed for the future and already meet even stricter IMO Tier III standards not due in service until later this decade.

The Rolls-Royce Bergen engine range includes:

  • B series gas engines (3,940 - 7,700 kW)
  • B series diesel engines (2,880 – 8,000 kW)
  • C series gas engines (1,460 - 2,430 kW)
  • C series diesel engines (1,920 – 3,000 kW)
  • B33:45 diesel engines (3600-5400kW)

The anticipated growth in the use of economical and environmentally beneficial gas engines is particularly advantageous for tugs and workboats, which will operate mainly in close proximity to bunker stations, enabling the vessels to carry relatively small gas fuel tanks.

This leaves extra space inside the hull for large engines that can deliver the high levels of power required for tug duties.  And even when they are idling, awaiting their next task or in transit and not under load, tugs can operate efficiently as our propulsion systems for tugs are designed with optimum fuel efficiency as well as performance and manoeuvrability in mind.
