Engines and turbines for cruise and ferry

Passengers on ferries and cruise liners, which may be at sea for weeks on end, depend on reliable power to get them smoothly from port to port, guide them accurately to their next destination and provide all the normal requirements of life such as electrical power for cooking, lighting and entertainment.

Rolls-Royce designs and manufactures a world-class range of gas and diesel engines and gas turbines for both propulsion and on-board electrical generation.  Our gas/diesel reciprocating engines accommodate a wide spread of power requirements, ranging from 1,400 to 8,000 kilowatts, while the MT30 gas turbine delivers 36,000kW and brings state-of-the-art Trent aero-engine technology to the cruise industry.

For passengers spending their journey or holiday at sea – and paying good money to enjoy creature comforts while on board – we take great care to ensure our equipment complements the pleasure by minimising noise, motion and vibration.  Our reputation for reliability also contributes to the experience by virtually guaranteeing vessels meet their timetabled schedule.

For operators, the increasing adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel – as used in our lean-burn gas engines range – delivers the dual benefits of high efficiency and very low emission levels.  The environmental benefit ensures that our gas engines already meet and beat 2016 standard emission regulation, and enables operators to utilise routes through Emission Control Areas (ECAs) that non-compliant vessels cannot enter.
