The importance of STEM in innovation

A lot of people ask what it’s like to be a STEM ambassador, as someone who doesn’t specialise in STEM. However, working at Rolls-Royce on the Supply Chain Apprenticeship gives you exposure to loads of different areas of the business, from engineers to finance and suppliers to customers.

Even though I’m not an engineer, mathematician or scientist myself, having an interest, or even a GCSE/A-Level, in STEM can really help when you’re trying to understand some of the technical challenges we face and the products we make. I wanted to get involved in STEM to stimulate a discussion about STEM subjects in schools. Even if it just encourages people to think about choosing a STEM related GCSE/A-Level, I believe this helps to keep the door open to a STEM related career.

That’s why I have really enjoyed working with Learn by Design over the last year to deliver a series of STEM workshops in local schools that focus on technology, innovation and careers.

That’s why I have really enjoyed working with Learn by Design over the last year to deliver a series of STEM workshops in local schools that focus on technology, innovation and careers.

Being able to start a conversation through the different interactive activities and hands-on tech (like the HoloLens or Lego Vernies) has already led to lots of discussions about how we use tech across the industry and the role that STEM specialists play in innovating and developing new technology.

It’s also been really inspiring to see some of the innovative ideas that are thought up in the design challenge as part of the workshops, and to see how many students want to use technology to help other people.

This helps us to explain how STEM is important in innovation, and how innovation can help make others – and our own – lives better.

Being involved with this STEM project has definitely helped me build my confidence, taught me how to adjust my presentation style to help engage the audience and it has given me the opportunity to build and expand my network by meeting other ambassadors and working with different organisations.

Also as a member of Prism (our LGBT+ Employee Resource Group), something that is really important to me is diversity & inclusion and being a STEM ambassador gives me the opportunity to encourage everyone regardless of their background, race, religion, sexuality or gender, that they are welcomed, wanted and supported in the STEM sector!
