As a recent engineering graduate I am excited to carry on my role as a STEM ambassador alongside my everyday role in System Design and Integration.
The STEM ambassador work I did whilst on the scheme was one of the highlights for me and I loved the whole process from engaging with different primary schools to running workshops.
As a STEM Ambassador my project management skills have grown as I was leading a team of other ambassadors and liaising directly with primary schools to organise events. It was also a great opportunity to widen my network by meeting other STEM ambassadors and colleagues as I was sourcing primary schools to reach out to through the schools their children attend.
In my view a successful STEM Ambassador is someone who is willing to step up and have a go, be enthusiastic and excited for the people you’re connecting with. It’s ok not to know all the details and have all the answers.
I was the team lead for the High Flyers workshop which involves taking a group of primary school children on an adventure, flying around three islands meeting various characters and solving engineering puzzles along the way. It is a LOT of fun and it’s great to see the children’s perception of what engineering and technology jobs are changing throughout the day.
I have ran sessions in many primary schools over the last year and it is fantastic to see the children engage and get excited about the different engineering and technology puzzles we have created for them. Initially it was out of my comfort zone dressing up and performing for the kids (I didn't do GCSE drama….) but you soon realise they just want to have fun and enjoy it! This whole experience has really helped my confidence and kept me growing. It’s also nice to see the teacher’s reaction, they’re pleased to see the children so engaged and they often say they have learnt something too!
Personally I have benefitted from inspirational Early Careers work myself and it was a big part of my journey in becoming an engineer – so I know it is important and really makes a difference in inspiring the next generation. It is a privilege to play that small part in someone's future career and I am proud to be a STEM ambassador.
