My intern experience…Jason Sia

Why did you want to do an internship at Rolls-Royce?

An aeronautical engineer by training, I have always been intrigued by how these powerful gas turbine engines provide thrust for flight. I always wanted to do an internship with Rolls-Royce, ever since I first toured Rolls-Royce in Singapore – where I call home. Currently studying in the UK, I seized on the opportunity to apply for a summer internship opportunity in Customer & Services Management. Through this programme, I hoped to gain a first-hand experience to understand how and why the Customer Teams at Rolls-Royce have been so successful at developing and maintaining effective relationships with airline customers all around the world. I also wanted to learn about the aero engine market from an OEM perspective, and understand more about Rolls-Royce’s bespoke aftermarket care services. Above all, I wanted to contribute my part to pioneering the power that matters.

What did you feel like on your first day?

On my first day, I was introduced to Rolls-Royce’s vision and strategy through the Global Induction. I then met up with my mentor whom I had always been in contact with via the online onboarding platform before I started. I felt welcomed as I was introduced to my colleagues in the department and was really excited to get going!

Tell us about your programme and what you’ve been working on.

As an Airline Market & Services Analyst summer intern in the Customer Office - Marketing department, I monitor the latest news and trends in the airline industry, analysing how these events could have an impact on the aero engine market and on Rolls-Royce. As a marketing tool, I also developed a cost projection model aimed at helping airline customers visualise the benefits, value and costs associated with the various aftermarket care services offered by Rolls-Royce, versus other alternatives offered in the industry. Finally, I contributed an article to the Rolls-Royce Used Fleet Flyer publication, sharing the latest updates on the Rolls-Royce MRO network, along with our strategy to ensure its capability and competitiveness. I am extremely grateful to my mentors for their guidance as I developed my skills and grew my knowledge in this field throughout my internship.

What has been your favourite part of your internship?

Being a self-proclaimed #AVGeek, my favourite part of this internship was naturally the opportunity to interact with engineers as I toured the various Production Floors, Engine Test Cells and the Aircraft Availability Centre, all of which operates 24/7 round the clock. I am just amazed by the sheer number of Rolls-Royce engines flying globally at any one time, and how technology has been employed to monitor engine health in real-time, thereby improving flight safety and minimising disruptions for airlines and their customers.

What do you like most about the location/city where you work?

Though Derby is not as bustling as London (where I go to for university), there was still plenty to keep me busy over the weekends. I’ll definitely miss the mouth-watering curry served in Derby - the best in the UK in my opinion!

Describe your experience at Rolls-Royce in one sentence.

An empowering, eye-opening and insightful internship that demonstrated to me what ‘pioneer the power that matters’ truly means.
