Apprenticeships for all

Alert

It’s National Apprenticeship Week in England so we’re celebrating all our apprentices across the UK.

Apprenticeships are for everyone. At Rolls-Royce, we not only help school leavers but people at all career and life stages realise their potential and develop essential skills for lifelong success. Whether that’s someone fresh from school (or still there for our Young Apprenticeship) or who has been out of work, or looking for a change of career direction, we have programmes that will value the skills and experiences they bring.

Apprentices are a vital part of our workforce and talent strategy allowing us to grow the skills we need, including re-skilling or developing our people.

We have around 1000 apprentices currently on a programme in the UK, across more than 25 different apprenticeships in engineering, operations and business across our whole company – and from Level 2 to Level 7.

Meet Rebecca, E’ajaz, Alyssia, Carole and Alfie.

  • How did you end up on your apprenticeship?

I studied Mechanical Engineering with Aerospace at the University of Glasgow, but after two years there, the opportunity for a Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce opened up and I just had to go for it!
  • Why engineering?

I’m a dancing teacher in my spare time, but while I was in school, my Physics teacher told me I should consider a career in engineering, and it stuck with me. My apprenticeship involves manufacturing engine parts, and that’s the kind of hands-on thing I love.
  • What has your journey taught you so far?

To be open-minded about my career goals. This programme has shown me there are so many different paths I can go down if I apply myself. I‘ve grown both as a person and professionally, constantly pushing outside of my comfort zone. So, choosing to do an apprenticeship is the best decision I have ever made. It’s kickstarted my career in a company I’m so proud to work for.

Level 4 Nuclear Technician Higher Apprentice

  • How did end up on your apprenticeship?

I was originally pursuing a career in law, but I had time to reflect during Covid-19. I’ve always had an interest in mechanical, electrical and software engineering. The Nuclear Technician Programme turned out to be the right fit for me, as I was able to pivot from Law to Engineering by pursuing an HNC — giving me a path into the world of engineering in a cutting-edge company.
  • Why engineering?

My apprenticeship requires me to always be inquisitive and proactive. I’ve gained technical skills and taken advantage of my pre-existing transferrable skills, such as public speaking. It helps me explain complex tasks and processes in a way the audience will understand, different methods of thinking and working (LEAN)
  • What has your journey taught you so far?

During my placements I’ve interacted with people at all levels of the business who have imparted valuable knowledge, their support has shown me there’s no limit to what I can achieve within the company, and outside the company in my personal life. So, I would advise other applicants not to overthink it and to take risks. You never know what doors this opportunity may open.

Alyssia Power

Level 6 Aerospace Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship

  • How did end up on your apprenticeship?

I grew up loving maths and developed a love for computer science, so I always knew the engineering industry was for me. Also, I’ve always been keen on apprenticeships. But I found that this one linked aerospace and software engineering in an interesting way.
  • Why engineering?

Before my apprenticeship, I was unsure of what specifically I would like to do within software engineering. However, after a couple of months working with people from all sectors, I have found a strong interest for software verification. My apprenticeship combines software engineering with exciting theory, allowing me to develop technical skills while working on fast-paced projects in safety-critical environment.
  • What has your journey taught you so far?

A key thing that Rolls-Royce has taught me is the importance of asking for feedback to help with continuous learning. I think because the technology sector is so fast-paced and constantly evolving, it’s important to stay curious and be excited about learning new things!

  • How did end up on your apprenticeship?

I’m 57 years’ old and left school at 16. Recently, I decided to look for an opportunity that could facilitate a career change that was both challenging and exciting. I came across the Rolls-Royce Switch programme and realised it could help me open up to change, embracing the studying of unfamiliar subjects, both practically and academically.
  • Why engineering?

I’ve spent the last year learning skills in machining, fitting, electronics and CNC appreciation programming, alongside Maths and Science, Health & Safety and how to thrive in the workplace environment. This has given me options in terms of my career goals and whatever I might decide to achieve.
  • What has your journey taught you so far?

Believe that anything is possible. Be open to new ideas, be willing to work as a team and be prepared to study something new. And if you decide to go for it, enjoy the experience.

  • How did end up on your apprenticeship?

I’m 15 and still in school. I’m studying Product Design, Computing, History and Engineering in my GCSEs, and spend one day a week as part of my engineering course here at Rolls-Royce.
  • Why engineering?

My brother applied for Rolls-Royce and is training here. I knew it was a good opportunity so had to take it. I did think it would be about cars, but I’m still enjoying it!
  • What has your journey taught you so far?

I have learnt how to use a lathe and how to follow a lot of instructions at once!
