2022 to 2024 Schools Prize finalists confirmed

2022 to 2024 Schools Prize finalists confirmed

Since 2004, our Schools Prize programme has been recognising inspiring teachers and helping them to develop innovative project ideas for their schools around the UK. Through the award, we’ve helped teachers boost engagement in science, mathematics and technology and encourage pupils to go on to study science and engineering qualifications.

This year, record numbers of candidates entered their innovative project ideas to get through the two-stage application programme and three judging panels, with just six Finalists beating off the competition.

Each of our Finalists will receive an award of £5,000 and be paired with a Rolls-Royce Mentor to support their project’s journey from September 2023 to April 2024.

Debbie Duro, Schools Prize Programme Manager said: “We had a record number of entries this year and our judges had a hard time shortlisting and ultimately selecting our Finalists from the great range of projects put forward. We’re looking forward to supporting our new Finalists to develop their exciting projects over the next 9 months. We’re also delighted to launch the Rolls-Royce Schools Prize Alumni Group enabling teachers and educators to share ideas, experience and expertise throughout their project journey and beyond.”

AKS Lytham, Lytham

Constructing The Future

What a lovely surprise to hear AKS Lytham have made the final, after a busy term. We have continued experimenting in the background as a department, but to hear we have won the extra funding to put our ideas into practice, alongside a Rolls-Royce mentor, is just fantastic!  We have many excited pupils ready to learn as we look forward to working with the industry next year.

Sarah Burke, Head of AKS Design & Technology added: “Opportunities like this don't come around often for schools, but real practical learning is vital in D&T and we are grateful to Rolls-Royce for the chance to explore new styles of learning and we will be sharing our progress.”

Bishop Burton College, North Humberside

Solving plastic pollution, there is mushroom for improvement

Bishop Burton College are thrilled to be selected as a finalist for the Rolls-Royce Schools Prize for Science and Technology award. The grant will allow us to carry out an extended STEM investigation with students, looking into helping to solve the world's plastic pollution with the help of mushrooms! The project will provide our students with the opportunity to carry out their own investigative project, allowing them to get hands-on with practical activities and try new scientific techniques which would not be possible without the funding. We greatly appreciate the support of Rolls-Royce with this exciting new venture.

Kents Hill Park Academy, Milton Keynes

Robotics in the Community

Kents Hill Park School are proud and excited to be one of the Rolls Royce Schools Prize finalists, with a little nervousness thrown in! We can’t wait to get started on our project – we’ve been planning for months and keeping our fingers crossed. We feel that not only will we be able to enrich and engage some of the most disadvantaged pupils but set up a framework to allow other schools to use our project as a blueprint for their own STEM engagement programme. Thank you, Rolls-Royce!

Escape from the Forest

It's fantastic for Ramsden Primary School to once again be recognised for the incredible work our teachers do to raise our children's aspirations and to show that we are leading the way in STEM Teaching in Nottingham. The outcomes from this project will not only affect the children in our school, but the wider community and continues the passionate work that Ramsden have undertaken over the last few years. We look forward to working with Rolls-Royce on an engaging and powerful project that seeks to challenge perceptions of STEM-based careers and show our children that they can pursue a future in STEM.

Ysgol y Graig Primary School, Merthyr Tydfil

Self-sufficient growing project

We are massively excited to have been selected as a finalist and we are really looking forward to starting the project. This funding will enable us to run a project that will be an amazing learning experience and opportunity to develop new skills for the children, involve all children and staff within the school setting and also support our local community. The project will enable us to create a whole school family ethos and also embed our school as the heart of the community.
