Rolls-Royce and CREATE Education were delighted to announce the winner of the New Scientist Live Competition. The competition was launched at New Scientist Live 2019 in partnership with Rolls-Royce and provided schools, colleges and community groups with the opportunity to win an Ultimaker 2+ 3D printer with a years’ supply of filament.

To be in with a chance to win the prize, which has a total value in excess of £2000, students were tasked with creating a solution to the question – ‘How could 3D printing be of use to engineers in the future?’

Each design could have been 2D or 3D and the originators needed to provide a brief description of the idea to show how they’d address the problems facing engineers in the future.

The judges from Rolls-Royce along with CREATE Education were impressed with the imagination and variety shown by students in their entries.

The winning entry was ‘Flouses Adventure Holiday’ submitted by Year 6 pupils at Leicester Islamic Academy, with entries from Wren Park Primary School and Bromley High School being highly commended.

“All of the entries were outstanding and illustrated how innovative you can get when you combine the creativity of young people with the endless possibilities of technologies such as 3D printing.  Well done to the Year 6 team at Leicester Islamic Academy – we look forward to seeing where their imagination takes them using their very own Ultimaker 3D printer” Paul Broadhead, Head of Community Investment & Education Outreach, Rolls-Royce.
