Inspiring Next Generation Talent in Japan

In association with Shimane University’s Next Generation Tatara Co-Creation Center, Rolls-Royce Japan held the Rolls-Royce Science Camp 2019 in October in Matsue, Shimane.

This was the third such annual event and this time in collaboration with Shimane University, with the support of Shimane Prefectural Government and the Shimane Board of Education. The Shimane University’s Next Generation Tatara Co-Creation Center hosted the programme.

Fostering Generation Aerospace

The programme featured 17 local high school students, including seven girls.

They all worked together over two days to learn about the fans used in jet engines, then formed groups to compete by designing and creating fans to make the fastest and most energy efficient hovercraft. Rolls-Royce is working to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education through

projects around the world to foster Generation Aerospace, inspiring next generation’s pioneers by inculcating in them a sense of curiosity and appetite for innovation. This year’s program was focused on future manufacturing, based on the concept of having high-school students become “pioneers of power” for two days. The students also gave presentations in English as part of Rolls-Royce’s desire to foster talented people to succeed globally.

"I have high hopes for the innovation ability of Japan’s next generation, who have again demonstrated their ability to create amazing new things… through our STEM education program."

I am very pleased to have been able to do it together with Shimane University, with the Next Generation Tatara Co-Creation Center, an organization which fosters innovation. Over the past three years, many teams have created their own unique hovercraft, suggesting their own solutions, and I have high hopes for the innovation ability of Japan’s next generation, who have again demonstrated their ability to create amazing new things. I want to continue to support future pioneers across Japan through our STEM education program."
