What is R2 Data Labs?

R2 Data Labs is the data innovation catalyst inside Rolls-Royce. It exists to deliver untapped value from data, acting as a development hub for new services that improve the way we and our customers operate.

We apply advanced data analytics, industrial Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to accelerate the development of new data insights, services and apps. Our unique operating model based on data innovation sprints means we can unlock new value from data, combining the latest analytics technology with Rolls-Royce’s industry knowledge and engineering expertise to better support our customers.

R2 Data Labs is new, but we’re building on a long history of data innovation at Rolls-Royce. For 30 years we’ve used data to transform the way power systems are made, operated and maintained for our customers. We’ve delivered millions of dollars in value, supported pioneering new service models, and even changed the way our customers think about maintenance.

But we believe we can do even more with data. We see huge untapped potential for our customers to achieve more efficient operations, driven by our engineering and sector experience and enhanced by a collaborative ‘co-creation’ approach. Our new model will mean we can deliver much more value from data for customers, in new areas, more quickly than ever before.

R2 Data Labs will work hand in hand with Rolls-Royce to deliver value to customers across all of our markets. We work with Rolls-Royce business units to develop data-led services and applications that improve operational performance for our customers, focusing on three key areas:

  • Efficiency – improving asset operation and maintenance to reduce costs
  • Availability – maximising asset availability to improve productivity
  • Risk and compliance – enhancing risk management and automating compliance processes

R2 Data Labs will also deliver value to Rolls-Royce.

  • We will apply this approach to find new ways to significantly increase efficiencies in our own internal operational processes.
  • We are developing data innovation communities to learn and share key skills and techniques –to make Rolls-Royce a Digital First organisation through connecting data innovators to collect, champion and inspire best practice.

Data agility

R2 Data Labs works closely with colleagues and customers to identify the right opportunities for data innovation.

We collect, verify and organise large quantities of relevant information, including design, manufacturing, operational, and environmental data. Our data analytics experts analyse this data using the latest techniques and technologies, including artificial intelligence. Then we apply the deep domain knowledge of Rolls-Royce experts to make sure the insights from the data are presented in the right way. This helps customers take action, and makes sure that this action can be readily implemented in the real world.

At the heart of R2 Data Labs are data innovation cells, which allow all this multifunctional expertise to be brought together and applied quickly. Each data innovation cell works in intensive sprints of no more than 90 days, applying DevOps practices to rapidly identify new insights and build new apps that can be developed into solutions and applications. All of this means we can move quickly – exploring data, discovering value, test new ideas, that can be turned into services or cost savings.

Collaborative innovation

The R2 Data Labs working model is made exponentially more powerful by our collaborative approach.

We are building the R2 Data Labs Innovation Ecosystem – a wide community of innovators including OEM partners, tech providers, cutting edge data innovation start-ups and academics. Working with this community, we can engage with new data streams, ideas and techniques to accelerate our data innovation.

This means our customers will benefit from the very latest thinking and technology from this diverse expert community – while still getting the industry-leading products and services they have come to expect from Rolls-Royce.

And for our partners, it means they will be plugged into a wider ecosystem of like-minded innovators, with new opportunities to deliver tangible value in some of the world’s most demanding industries.

We believe that collaborative innovation will release the most undiscovered value from data. Through the launch of R2 Data Labs, Rolls-Royce customers will benefit from a continuous stream of innovative new services that support their operations, reduce their costs, and enhance their productivity.
