Today at Rolls-Royce we are undergoing a revolution, transforming our engineering processes and the way we design our products. This radical transformation is necessary in order for us to deliver new, pioneering power systems faster and cheaper, ultimately reducing risk to our customers and helping to ensure our products operate as expected, right first time. 
 
In order to help us achieve our digital transformation, we’ve created FUNDAMENTAL, a detailed map of the entire engineering modelling landscape. We are already using the tool to understand how information flows through our engineering organisation, to identify clusters of models which undergo tight iteration loops and to automate the data flows between these models. FUNDAMENTAL is a foundational piece of work that will enable us to truly embrace the game-changing technology already at Rolls-Royce, to simplify and automate our processes.

The future of FUNDAMENTAL

We’re already using FUNDAMENTAL to identify repetitive data transfer tasks carried out by our engineers, alerting us to the opportunity for automation (please see Automated Digital Design System). 
 
Ultimately FUNDAMENTAL will enable us to connect clusters of automated digital design models together, resulting in entire design systems that are updated automatically when new requirements are introduced at the press of a button. This means we can quickly adjust to changes and deliver innovative designs in a fraction of the time, significantly reducing risk through the fusion of FUNDAMENTAL, software development environments and High Performance Computing. 
 
FUNDAMENTAL, augmented by our other digital technologies, will enable us to deliver next generation capability to our customers faster at lower cost.   

 

Engineering for Digital First

FUNDAMENTAL is a critical enabler in building the Digital Thread. The digital thread links the data-information knowledge system, related sets of models and data build to form a view of the Digital Twin. This in turn will reduce our reliance on repeated physical tests, significantly increasing the likelihood of “right-first-time”, and importantly reducing cost, risk and time to deliver to our customer.
