Strategic partner to Malaysia’s aerospace and industrial development

Rolls-Royce is a founding member of the Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC), established by the Malaysian Aerospace Council to focus on research and development in Malaysia’s aerospace industry.

We also support the Board of Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) to drive partnerships between the private and public sectors to grow Malaysia’s aerospace and technology industries.

Rolls-Royce powers Malaysia Airlines’ fleet of Airbus A350 aircraft with its Trent XWB engines. In August 2022, the Malaysia Airlines Group agreed to acquire 20 new Airbus A330neo, powered by Rolls-Royce’s Trent 7000 engines, as part of its fleet modernisation plan. The aircraft will be delivered to the airline from the third quarter of 2024 through to 2028.

AirAsia X, another major customer in Malaysia, selected Rolls-Royce's Trent 700 engines for its fleet of Airbus A330 and the Trent 7000 engine to power its fleet of Airbus A330neo aircraft.

In August 2015, Rolls-Royce signed a 25+5 year agreement with UMW Aerospace to manufacture and assemble fan cases for Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-TEN and Trent 7000 aero engines. The first fan case was delivered to Rolls-Royce in November 2017. In April 2023, UMW Aerospace secured a fresh contract to manufacture rear cases for the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-TEN and Trent 7000 aircraft engines.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is a key Rolls-Royce customer, operating a fleet of Adour Mk871-powered Hawk aircraft. Rolls-Royce powers the transport squadron of the RMAF, which currently operates a fleet of T56-powered C-130H aircraft. The RMAF also operates the Aermacchi MB339 trainer aircraft powered by the Viper engine, and the VVIP aircraft Global Express powered by the BR710.

The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is also a Rolls-Royce customer and was the first defence force to take delivery of the new Super Lynx 300 helicopter powered by the CRS800 engine from the LHTEC joint venture between Rolls-Royce and Honeywell. The RMN now operates six highly sophisticated Super Lynx helicopters at sea from its frigates.

Malaysia has a sizeable installed base of mtu-brand engines for both military and commercial applications. Sales and service are provided via our distribution network joint venture with Sapura Resources Berhad known as MTU Power Systems Sdn Bhd.

Indonesia

Powering Indonesia

The earliest confirmed presence of Rolls-Royce in Indonesia were the Dart engines on Fokker F27 aircraft purchased by Indonesian state oil company Pertamina in 1966.

Rolls-Royce's operations in Indonesia include an office in Jakarta and an Airline Support Team at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Rolls-Royce is Indonesia’s largest widebody aircraft aero-engine supplier, powering and servicing Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air for regional and intercontinental routes. We power around 80 per cent of all widebody aircraft in Indonesia. The Rolls-Royce Trent 700 powers flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia’s Airbus A330 fleet; and the next generation of this engine, the Trent 7000, began operations with Garuda’s Airbus A330neo aircraft in 2019.

Our engines power critical infrastructure such as utilities, data centres, hospitals, banks and airports. They provide power to industrial plants and mining sites, and move ships, mining trucks, military vehicles and locomotives across Indonesia.

We are committed to servicing our customers with a growing installed base of more than 3 GW power. We have expanded our power solutions portfolio with microgrids and CO2 neutral technologies, such as H2 gas engines, battery storage, electrolysers, to support our customers on their journey towards Net Zero.

Rolls-Royce is the largest supplier of engines to the Indonesian armed forces. Its engines power various fleets including:

  • C-130 Hercules transport aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce T56 turboprops
  • Hawk jet trainer and light combat aircraft powered by Adour engines
  • Grob primary trainer aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce M250 turboprops

Several hundred Rolls-Royce gas turbines also power helicopter fleets belonging to Indonesia’s military, police and government agencies. The Indonesian Air Force is also expecting the delivery of heavy transport aircraft A400M, powered by TP400 military turboprop engine developed by a consortium led by Rolls-Royce.

Thailand

Partners today and tomorrow

Rolls-Royce Thailand’s office was established in Bangkok in 1989.

We work closely with the Board of Investment to identify opportunities to expand aerospace manufacturing footprint in Thailand and have helped to develop a large supply base with three separate suppliers committed to long-term manufacturing.

Rolls-Royce has an Airline Support Team at Suvarnabhumi Airport providing engine support services to customers. Thai Airways is a long-standing customer, dating back to 1963 when the Rolls-Royce Avon powered the Caravelle III. The national carrier currently operates the following versions of the Trent engine:

  • The Trent XWB powers the airline’s fleet of A350 aircraft
  • The Trent 1000 powers the fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Thai Airways was the launch customer for the Trent 800 on both the -200 and -300 versions of the Boeing 777. The partnership between Thai Airways and Rolls-Royce was extended with the design-and-build of a Large Engine Test Cell at Don Muang International Airport.

Our other customer in Thailand is Thai Air Asia X which operates Trent 700 powered A330s. Rolls-Royce also powers Gulfstream, Bombardier and Citation X aircraft used by the Thai government, armed forces and private operators.

Business ties can be traced back to 1970s with the commissioning of the multipurpose frigate, HTMS Makut Rajakumarn. There are currently more than 60 Rolls-Royce engines in operation across the three Royal Thai Armed Forces, which power the C-130, the Embraer Legacy, Bell 206 and the EN480.

Rolls-Royce also supplies overhaul services to the Thai Armed Forces through our specialist facilities located throughout the world.

Rolls-Royce's Power Systems business has an installed base of mtu engines in Thailand, supporting customers in sectors including marine, railway and power generation.

Vietnam

Supporting growth in a transforming country

In 2015, Vietnam Airlines became the first airline in Asia and the second in the world to operate the Trent XWB engine on its fleet of 14 Airbus A350s.

In 2022, Rolls-Royce also signed a deal with Vietjet to provide Trent 700 engines to power its 10 Airbus A330 aircraft.

The Philippines

Flying higher and going farther

Rolls-Royce has been serving major airlines in the Philippines since 2013.

Our Trent 700 engines have powered Philippine Airlines’ Airbus A330 aircraft since the first selection of Trent engines by the airline in 2013. In 2016, the national carrier ordered six Airbus A350 to be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.

In 2023, Rolls-Royce also signed a TotalCare service agreement with Philippine Airlines for Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines that will power nine Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.

Cebu Pacific also operates eight Airbus A330 powered by our Trent 700 engines, with a fleet of Airbus A330neo on order.
