An Engine for Growth

An engine for growth for the UK economy and proud partner to the UK’s armed forces

The UK has a once in a generation opportunity to deliver a step-change in growth, resilience, prosperity and security through Government backing of the country’s highly differentiated sovereign capabilities in aero-engine and nuclear technology. As the UK’s aerospace and nuclear champion Rolls-Royce is that engine for growth, uniquely placed to lead this national endeavour for our country.

Stronger, more resilient UK aerospace and nuclear sectors are vital for the nation’s national and economic security, and they are essential for the security of our allies. Actions taken now to invest and grow the UK’s sovereign aerospace and nuclear capabilities have enormous potential to drive UK growth, skills and jobs over the next few decades.

Securing sovereign Aero Technology

We are the UK’s national champion for combat engine technologies, supporting national security and spreading economic growth across the UK. We are key to priority defence programmes, including GCAP as well as AUKUS and the UK Continuous At Sea Deterrent. The Government’s Defence Industrial Strategy named combat air – as well as nuclear - as national security industrial priorities and committed to the development of a more resilient supply chain, driving export opportunities and creating high-skilled jobs – all contributing to UK economic growth. The UK is strategically advantaged with both commercial and defence aero-engine capabilities and we welcome the Government’s commitment to prioritising investment in dual-use technologies. Our collective ambitions are clear. We must now work at pace to deliver on this national endeavour.

Powering growth and prosperity

The UK has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver a step-change in economic growth and huge boost to exports through securing a UK aero-engine position on the next generation of short-haul – or ‘narrowbody’ – aircraft. Participation in the next generation of these aircraft in the 2030s is the “single biggest opportunity in aerospace over the next 50 years” according to the Government’s own Industrial Strategy. Through continued Government backing, we can unlock billions in export value and create 40,000 supply chain jobs in facilities across the country. Our extensive investment in the UltraFan® programme, positions us for success with next generation technology for future narrowbody and widebody applications. Continued partnership with the Government-backed Aerospace Technology Institute is crucial to success. The UK Government now has the opportunity to unlock a once-in-a-generation opportunity by supporting Rolls-Royce as an engine for growth.

Securing Sovereign Nuclear Technology

The UK Government wants energy security, high-skilled jobs and economic growth and Rolls-Royce can deliver. We are the only company, globally, with full nuclear lifecycle experience and end-to-end capabilities. Our expertise is enabling us to expand into advanced nuclear technologies. Rolls-Royce SMR is Europe’s leading Small Modular Reactor (SMR) business and the preferred bidder to develop the UK’s first SMRs, providing energy resilience and zero-carbon power. Delivering those first three SMRs will support an average of almost 8,000 high-skilled UK jobs per year, while building a fleet could contribute £54bn for the British economy and unlock significant export opportunities. The Government is committed to getting nuclear project sites approved and progressed more quickly and we must now work at pace to realise the benefits of the UK’s first mover advantage in SMRs. Our expertise is also enabling us to expand into advanced modular reactors (AMRs) where UK support could open up a global industrial market worth billions.

The UK Government’s Industrial Strategy and Defence Industrial Strategy show long-term strategic foresight

  • The Industrial Strategy clearly recognises that Aerospace and Nuclear are frontier industries that can drive growth, deliver skilled jobs and increase UK exports; industries in which Rolls-Royce from the UK plays a leading role globally.
  • In Aerospace, we wholeheartedly agree with Government that gas turbine technology is critical to national and economic security, and “the single biggest opportunity in aerospace over the next 50 years is to secure a UK engine position on next generation single aisle programmes”.
  • We welcome the Government’s commitment to the vital research which will help to keep the UK’s aerospace industry at the forefront of innovation, including through the extension of the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) programme to 2035.
  • Nuclear and combat air capabilities are identified in the Defence Industrial Strategy as “national security industrial priorities” where the Government will prioritise the UK’s sovereign and differentiated capabilities that build resilience and attract export growth. We must now work at pace to deliver on this potential.
  • We will work with Government to realise their ambition to promote the country’s advantage in strategic, dual-use technologies to strengthen our defence industrial base and drive growth. We welcome the Government’s recognition – in the Defence Industrial Strategy – of jet engines as one of the UK’s greatest dual use strengths
  • In Nuclear, Rolls-Royce has globally unique capability. The UK Government has backed Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) “for European deployment” and recognised our potential to give the UK a leading position.
  • We will work with Government on the next opportunity in nuclear: Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) where we have unique homegrown capability.

Our collective ambitions are clear. Now the strategy must be implemented at pace. There is enormous potential to drive growth, exports, skills and jobs.

UK growth, prosperity, resilience and security

will only be achieved if the UK has a strong industrial base, energy security, access to markets and retains its freedom to operate.

At Rolls-Royce, we stand ready to work with all our home nations to unlock these benefits and secure growth and security for many decades to come.
