Reman (from remanufacturing) refers to the industrial refurbishment of main components and engines. The mtu PowerPacks and engines are completely dismantled, cleaned, tested and reassembled with reman components or new parts in standardized processes. Product improvements are automatically taken into account. The environment also benefits from mtu Reman solutions: Products that are at the end of their service life are not simply disposed of but renewed from the ground up. This process minimizes the need for raw materials and energy. The PowerPacks are then returned to the customer as good as new and are available for a further operating cycle of around 18,000 hours.
Rolls-Royce can also provide so-called “swing units” before the drive unit is removed. These are exchange PowerPacks or engines that replace the power packs to be overhauled so that the railcars and locomotives can be put into operation very quickly.
mtu PowerPacks are compact propulsion systems which, in addition to the engine and power transmission, contain all the auxiliary units required to drive the vehicle, such as the cooling system and exhaust gas aftertreatment. Rolls-Royce Power Systems was the first supplier worldwide to develop this concept 28 years ago and has since supplied more than 8000 mtu rail PowerPacks to rail customers all over the world.
