Rolls-Royce remanufactures 170 mtu rail PowerPacks for NETINERA regional trains

Rolls-Royce and rail operator NETINERA have signed a further contract for the complete overhaul of around 170 rail mtu PowerPacks. NETINERA is one of the largest transportation companies in Germany and operates local and regional public transport services with buses and trains. The refurbished mtu PowerPacks are used in regional trains such as the Lint 41 shown here in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Rolls-Royce and rail operator NETINERA have signed a further contract for the complete overhaul of around 170 rail mtu PowerPacks. The agreement runs until 2028 and provides for the complete overhaul of the PowerPacks using the so-called reman process. These are mtu propulsion systems that comply with the EU Stage IIIB emissions standard and are based on the 6H1800R85L engine. The first refurbished PowerPacks were recently delivered.

NETINERA is one of the largest transport companies in Germany and operates local and regional public transport services with buses and trains. The overhauled mtu PowerPacks are used in Lint 41, Lint 54 and Lint 81 regional trains in Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria, among other regions. “Rolls-Royce has been a reliable partner for us for many years and is the right specialist for the general overhaul of the drive systems in our fleet,” said Markus Resch, CFO and Managing Director at NETINERA. “The mtu Reman process is a cost-effective and sustainable solution for us.”

NETINERA has been relying on reman solutions from Rolls-Royce for many years: PowerPacks from the transport company have already been overhauled at its site in Magdeburg in the past. Another contract is currently running with NETINERA until 2035, which provides for the overhaul of 20 PowerPacks per year.

Marc Goldschmidt, Vice President Remanufacturing & Overhaul Technologies at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said:

The fact that NETINERA is once again relying on our reman solutions underlines the attractiveness of our basic overhauls. They guarantee a product that is equivalent in performance and reliability to a new mtu PowerPack - and is environmentally friendly and efficient. Expanding our service business to include more sustainable solutions is part of our strategy.”

Reman (from remanufacturing) refers to the industrial refurbishment of main components and engines. The mtu PowerPacks and engines are completely dismantled, cleaned, tested and reassembled with reman components or new parts in standardized processes. Product improvements are automatically taken into account. The environment also benefits from mtu Reman solutions: Products that are at the end of their service life are not simply disposed of but renewed from the ground up. This process minimizes the need for raw materials and energy. The PowerPacks are then returned to the customer as good as new and are available for a further operating cycle of around 18,000 hours.

Rolls-Royce can also provide so-called “swing units” before the drive unit is removed. These are exchange PowerPacks or engines that replace the power packs to be overhauled so that the railcars and locomotives can be put into operation very quickly.

mtu PowerPacks are compact propulsion systems which, in addition to the engine and power transmission, contain all the auxiliary units required to drive the vehicle, such as the cooling system and exhaust gas aftertreatment. Rolls-Royce Power Systems was the first supplier worldwide to develop this concept 28 years ago and has since supplied more than 8000 mtu rail PowerPacks to rail customers all over the world.
