Rolls-Royce North America Supports Global Sustainability Goals

On June 17, Rolls-Royce announced our global pathway to Net Zero by 2050. In the U.S., Rolls-Royce is leading a host of activities to help the company achieve that goal.

Tom Bell, Chairman & CEO – Rolls-Royce North America and President – Defense said: “We’re ready to put our history of innovation to the test once again. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to combat climate change by enabling and even accelerating our transition to a net zero carbon future. We will meet that challenge by doing what we do best; Pioneering the Power that Matters – cleaner, more sustainable power for our customers and the environment.”

Following are just some examples of how Rolls-Royce in the U.S. supports the drive to a more sustainable future.

Reaching net zero in operations by 2030

Following a $400M investment to revitalize our Indianapolis campus – our largest manufacturing site in the U.S. – we have reduced Green House Gas emissions by approximately a third since 2014. We are currently working with key energy providers to set a formal renewable energy source target and analyzing the opportunity to install on-site renewable energy generation applications and technologies. The Indianapolis campus is on track to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030 in line with our corporate goals.

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs)

Rolls-Royce has been successfully testing SAFs for more than ten years at our facilities in Indianapolis. To date, we have evaluated and gained approval for four blended SAFs and we continue testing other blended and 100% SAFs.

These approved fuel blends continue to be evaluated in current Rolls-Royce engines with both civil and military flight evaluations underway to qualify their use more broadly.

Electrification

Rolls-Royce is a world leader in the hybrid and all-electric market. We are unique in offering a full propulsion and power system portfolio, and with our aerospace, defense and power system capabilities, we are investing into these markets and have the customer commitments to prove it.

In the U.S., we provide American-made power plants and expertise in electrical systems to support a host of sustainability programs throughout the company.

Microgrid solutions

The Rolls-Royce Power Systems manufacturing plant in Aiken County, South Carolina has installed a sustainable microgrid solution onsite that is a practical demonstrator for end-users considering a microgrid for their energy resilience projects. The microgrid is anchored on a 2MW solar field, with 1MW of battery storage. Other sustainable technologies being considered for addition to the system at the site include fuel cells, hydrogen storage, and other energy storage technologies.

Strategic partnerships and industry influence

Rolls-Royce and NASA enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship on a litany of technologies that have made aviation safer and more efficient including variable geometry fans, advanced materials technology, and volcanic ash ingestion testing to name a few.

Rolls-Royce has been a partner of the FAA Continuous Low Energy Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) public/private partnership with industry since the beginning of this successful program in 2010. The CLEEN program is the FAA's principal environmental effort to accelerate the development of new aircraft and engine technologies.

Rolls-Royce has a long-standing relationship with Purdue University and partners on a host of activities that will help lead to a step-change in engine efficiencies which will include the development of hybrid-electric systems.

And, we are working within influential aviation industry associations to advocate for industry-wide goals and progress in the sustainability space.

“Rolls-Royce is committed to an environmentally-responsible future in both our operations and the products we deliver to help enable our customers become Net Zero while untethering them from fossil fuels,” said Tom.
