Diversity drives initiative; initiative inspires excellence

In March 2020, Rolls-Royce led the formation of the Emergent Alliance, initially a group of seven founding member organisations, that has since grown to be a diverse global community of volunteer organisations, data scientists and data owners, working together to help the world economy recover from the pandemic.

My Emergent Alliance journey started at the end of March this year, shortly before its public launch in April. I was near the start of my next rotation in the Rolls-Royce data innovation catalyst, R2 Data Labs. And as an avid engineer, coder and volunteer, I can confidently describe my Emergent Alliance experience as: LIFE-CHANGING.

It involved a blend of exposure to other companies – such as founding members Google Cloud, IBM, Truata – and start-ups, to dedicated people with various backgrounds and, ultimately, to data and AI.

Looking back, the past six months in R2 Data Labs and Emergent Alliance has reshaped the way I think, innovate and solve problems.

Big Data Sustainability

Looking back, the past six months in R2 Data Labs and Emergent Alliance has reshaped the way I think, innovate and solve problems.

I believe that diversity drives initiative and initiative inspires excellence. So in an effort to support the future generation of female data scientists and artificial intelligence developers, I’ve been part of how R2 Data Labs has partnered with CodeFirstGirls to organise a hackathon under the challenge ‘Big Data Sustainability’ at CodeFest 2020.

Running throughout September, the event aims at encouraging and sharing opportunities for women who are passionate about data and coding.

Providing the participants with economic data, electricity consumption in the UK and the stringency index, R2 Data Labs and IBM challenged them with finding an index that quantifies the effects of lockdown measures on the economy and the environment, as part of Emergent Alliance Ltd.

The challenge statement was designed to find out what the ‘new normal’ looks like during the Covid-19 and what the new patterns in people’s behaviours are.

The winning team will have a chance to work alongside R2 Data Labs to build economic resilience within Emergent Alliance. The results of the hackathon fit into a bigger picture – the Regional Risk and Pulse Index Project, developed in the Emergent Alliance between R2 Data Labs and IBM, a project in which I took part.

Stay tuned to find out what participants at CodeFirstGirls are innovating! If you want to get a flavour of my journey in Emergent Alliance, join! Trust me, you will never forget it!
