Winning together to strengthen MRO capability

At Rolls-Royce, developing our Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capability is key to sustainable operational excellence and satisfying our growing demand. That all starts with investing in our people.

This year, we relaunched and expanded our MRO exchange programme, bringing participants from across our global network of overhaul bases to the UK to strengthen collaboration and share best practice. The programme is a crucial step towards achieving world-class MRO capability and nurturing future global leaders in this field.

Previously run in collaboration with our overhaul partner HAESL prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the programme has now been reintroduced and expanded to include Sanad, based in the United Arab Emirates, with future plans for Rolls-Royce individuals to undertake international placements starting in June 2026.

Ragdah Alrowahi leads the Electrical Systems Workshop at Sanad, overseeing operations across multiple engine lines and manages a team dedicated to quality, efficiency and continuous improvement.

Since joining Rolls-Royce as part of her exchange in July, Ragdah has gained hands-on exposure across Engine Overhaul Services. She’s identified several cost- and time-saving strategies she intends to bring back to Sanad, ranging from the application of 3D printed parts that reduce reliance on external vendors to daily ways of working that help prioritisation and inspection processes.

“The knowledge and hands-on experience I gain, particularly from the experts at Rolls-Royce, will directly contribute to advancing Sanad’s MRO capabilities,” she explains. “I plan to adapt and refine certain systems to enhance both effectiveness and efficiency, aiming for more streamlined operations and better overall outcomes.”

Ragdah described the programme as “a great opportunity to enhance my skills and confidence” and emphasised that exposure to operational and leadership discussions, such as weekly meetings on strengths and opportunities, is invaluable to her professional development.

Reinforcing the spirit of collaboration

Peter Leung had the chance to participate in the exchange programme as part of his Graduate Trainee scheme at HAESL. Since joining the Aftermarket Operations Engine Overhaul Services team, he’s been able to focus on Module Overhaul, supporting Production Leaders and playing a key role in improvement projects.

Peter highlighted the work Rolls-Royce is doing on Intelligent Torque Tightening technology and his excitement about exploring smart factory technologies like Virtual Factory and AI-driven solutions, which he says are “shaping the future of MRO.”

“Beyond technical insights like engineering governance and best practices, the most valuable takeaway is the network I’ve built,” he says. “Reconnecting with colleagues across the MRO network – especially after the isolation of COVID-19 – has reinforced the spirit of collaboration.”

For Peter, the experience has reiterated the importance of cultivating a “growth mindset” – being curious, open-minded and consistently trying to learn new things.

To achieve world-class MRO capability, we need to learn together

Paul Keenan, Director of Aftermarket Operations, highlights the importance of initiatives like this for the Rolls-Royce business: “The programme is integral to our strategy of developing world-class MRO capability” he says. “Collaborating across the global network, learning from each other, sharing best practice and developing the next generation of future MRO leaders is key to our long-term collective success.”

Brendan Greatorex, VP People – Aftermarket Operations, welcomes the continued collaboration across the network to develop talent. “The MRO exchange programme is designed to provide participants with invaluable experience and exposure across a global operational context,” he explains. “The collaboration across the organisations has been fantastic and every participant has brought energy, enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, as well as valuable insights and experience.”
