Trent 1000 Combustion and Turbines Sub-System Technical Lead

I’m currently the Sub-System Technical Lead for the High Pressure Turbine durability package for the Trent 1000 TEN Engine. With my team I have been working in a focused project team to fix the HP Turbine blade to extend the engine life for our customers longer than 1000 cycles. It has been vital to understand the root cause of the issues facing the current turbine blade in order to make sure that our fix is robust. This has lots of system complexity which has required creativity and innovation to develop solutions and to find ways to test that they work in a very short timescale. With the added challenge of COVID working in an integrated engineering team has allowed me to test my leadership and engineering skills. To solve this problem we have needed a diverse set of skills and people.

Increasing diversity in Engineering is vital so that we can continue to solve these type of challenges in the future.

Who inspires me: Dame Ann Dowling, the first female head of engineering at Cambridge and the first female President of the Royal Academy of Engineering. She led a project into Silent Aircraft Design when I was at university and inspired me to see that aerospace engineers could be women and they could make it to the top of their field. I still use some of her lessons today!

Tsamaija Forsythe-Gidharry

Materials Laboratories Degree Apprentice

I am a Materials Laboratories Degree Apprentice currently in my final year. I’ve spent the last year carrying out placements in both Manufacturing and Materials environments getting involved with the testing, manufacture, and processing of materials within Civil Aerospace. More recently I’ve particularly been working on digital tools such as image processing and coded software and seeing how this capability can be used to improve the analysis of materials. My favourite part of working in Materials is how diverse the problems can be and being surrounded by the expertise I can lean into to solve those problems.

Dr Chloe Palmer

Specialist Research Engineer

Dr Chloe Palmer

Specialist Research Engineer

My areas of expertise include aircraft and spacecraft platform and propulsion concept design, gas turbine conceptual design, cryogenics and hydrogen, and electrical propulsion. My work is heavily focused on driving Rolls-Royce toward NetZero, particularly in the fields of hydrogen and electric propulsion systems for aircraft; I’m currently leading the effort to determine whether there are any viable future products for Rolls-Royce using liquid hydrogen as a fuel for aviation. I’m also a transgender woman.

Who inspires me? Martine Rothblatt – An American CEO, entrepreneur, lawyer, engineer, inventor, and pilot, and one of my main inspirations towards coming out as transgender.

Maria Ivanciu

Data Scientist, R2 Data Labs

I am a Data Scientist within Rolls-Royce's own tech hub, R2 Data Labs. I am specialising in delivering Machine Learning solutions for a fundamental range of problems across the business. I completed my education at the University of Cambridge where I graduated with a Distinction and a double Master’s in Aerospace and Information Engineering. When I am not coding, I am either volunteering as a Marketing and Recruitment Officer for Aspire Academy or teaching STEM subjects to high school students.

Who inspires me? Mary-Sherman Morgan (she discovered the liquid fuel hydyne), Dr Claire Barlow (she was my mentor and supervisor while I was at Cambridge)

Tiffany White

Head of Engineering Operations, Defence, North America

I am an Engineering leader that is working every day to create an inclusive environment to help increase the sense of meaning, purpose, confidence, trust, and perseverance to that together we can grow, deliver, & excel. I invest my expertise to increasing the number of women who study and work in STEM through executing programs that expose girls to a STEM career, role modeling through speaking engagements, mentoring, and influencing positive change by relentless engagement of business and community leaders. Rolls-Royce provides opportunities for me to pursue these goals through the management of Defense Engineering capability and capacity, as a member of our Defense I&D board, and through the wide array of company sponsored ERG events each month.
