Rolls-Royce has a huge presence in the UK. We directly employ over 23,000 people, and through our supply chains and employee spending support around 106,000 people. That accounts for about one in every 300 UK jobs.
Rolls-Royce UK generates annual sales of around £5.7 billion, three-quarters of which comes from exports, meaning that we are directly responsible for 2 percent of total UK goods exports. Moreover, we are responsible for approximately £6 in every £1,000 of GDP generated in the UK.
Over the past 20 years we've also invested over £12.5 billion in research and development in the UK. And we've invested in 19 University Technology Centres at 14 UK universities, keeping our engineers at the forefront of scientific research.
These are a lot of numbers, but they all add up to the same thing: a business that is both thriving in its own right and crucial to raising the standard of living for all people throughout the UK.
With a workforce of over 12,000 people, Derby has the largest concentration of Rolls-Royce employees in the UK. Most work in our Civil Aerospace business, while many work in the Submarines business, which is also based here. Whether you're interested in research and technology, manufacturing operations or business support services, Derby is the ideal place to gain exposure to the full-breadth of our company.
The Rolls-Royce Academy- which recruits 200-250 apprentices annually - and The Learning and Career Development Centre - which is used by 250,000 people each year for training courses, conferences and meetings - are both based in Derby.
The total Rolls-Royce estate in Derby is 400,000 square metres. One in every 11 workers in Derby is directly employed by Rolls-Royce, the city has the highest export value per capita of any city in the UK - three times the national average - and Derby is England's fastest-growing city for wealth creation by GVA (Gross Value Added). It is also an affordable place to live, not far from the Peak District and the National Forest, and just a two hours' train ride from London.
We also have a large number of sites across the United Kingdom, including corporate headquarters in London. In Bristol, we employ over 3,000 people across a number of businesses and recently invested over £75 million redeveloping the site as part of a nationwide investment in world-class operations and assembly facilities.
Other key locations include East Kilbride, Ansty, Barnoldswick, Inchinnan, Hucknall and Sunderland. In Rotherham we are constructing our new Advanced Blade Casting Facility (ABCF). This facility will deliver a step change in the methods used to cast Advanced Single Crystal Turbine Blades and will be focused on the production of high and intermediate Pressure Turbine Blade Castings for large Civil Trent Engines. Construction has begun and the first components will be delivered in 2014.
