Life as a Rolls-Royce technician

Meticulous assembly

Every nozzle, fan blade and bolt that travels across the world to Singapore is precisely assembled into an engine by hand by a team of technicians. Each engine has to pass one final test before it leaves our Seletar Campus: a test carried out by Stanley Dass.

Stanley is an Engine Inspector for the Trent 900, which powers the Airbus A380, and the Trent 1000, which powers the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Stanley and his team of technicians are the very last people to inspect the engines before they are delivered to our customers. With 18,000 parts in the Trent 1000 alone, Stanley has exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach. We sat down with him to learn about his journey from joining Rolls-Royce as a trainee to becoming one of our most trusted technicians leading and training a talented team.

“If the idea of working with your hands to build some of the most precise and complex machines in the world appeals, there’s no better place to be.”

- Stanley Dass, Technician

A typical day looks like…

Every day is different. I could be working on a full engine inspection, teaching new technicians or overseeing the workflow to ensure the engines move smoothly through the final inspection process. I really enjoy the variety that my role provides.

I love my job because…

I love using the skills I’ve learnt to help build jet engines that are truly world class. My work and my inspections help ensure the safety of our airline crew and passengers, and it’s a privilege to be able to work on the most advanced jet engines in the world.

To do my job, you need to be…

Highly organised, dependable, independent, have good attention to detail and brave enough to try new things.

How I got into aviation…

After I finished National Service I found out about engineering careers available at Rolls-Royce at a careers fair. I had always been interested in engineering and the aerospace industry, so I applied for a place as a Trainee Technician.

My hard work as a trainee has paid off: after three years I was promoted to become an inspector, which was one of the most rewarding moments of my career so far. There are lots of great opportunities for career progression here.

If you’re a student who’s thinking of working in the aerospace industry, I would advise you to…

Attend a school with a good aerospace programme, try to take part in placement opportunities with aerospace manufacturing firms and talk to people who work as aerospace technicians to learn more about the field.

We’re hiring Technicians in Singapore

Stanley’s journey started as a technician, and so could yours. We’re looking for more people like Stanley to become our next batch of technicians within our engine assembly facility (SATU) and fan blade manufacturing facility (FBSG).

Our SATU Technicians help to assemble and inspect our most prized engines and in FBSG our team help to manufacture our hollow titanium Wide Chord Fan Blades, a unique technology that has played a key role in the success of the Trent aero engine family. You’ll work as a team to make sure everything is rigorously checked, and we welcome people who can analyse and solve problems and proactively find better ways to do things.

You’ll get hands-on training in all aspects of our business to help you understand what you’re part of and also give you what you need to grow and develop within Rolls-Royce.
