Inspiring the next generation through the 2022 Science Film Festival

Rolls-Royce is committed to advancing STEM education to develop the capabilities of our people, and of the communities and economies in which we operate. To further this mission, Rolls-Royce was proud to partner with the Science Film Festival (SFF) 2022 in Southeast Asia. The SFF aims to promote scientific literacy amongst children and youths and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians from across the region. .

Organised by the Goethe-Institut, the theme of SFF 2022 was ‘Equal Opportunities in Science’, which closely aligns with Rolls-Royce’s philosophy to promote accessible and inclusive STEM education for everyone.

During the festival, Rolls-Royce aimed to increase awareness around the issue of diversity and inclusiveness in STEM fields and promote the message that study and work in science is for everyone, and to the benefit of all sections of society. This message is one that Rolls-Royce holds close to our heart, and we are working to reach 25 million people globally through quality STEM education by 2030.

The Science Film Festival 2022

SFF 2022 was a fantastic showcase of outstanding international films that presented scientific advances and issues in an accessible and entertaining way to a broad and young audience. Film screenings were accompanied by interactive workshops and other educational activities to inform and inspire the next generation.

The festival began in Indonesia in October, marked by an opening ceremony and celebration at Goethe House Jakarta. During the event, Dr. Bicky Bhangu, President of Southeast Asia, Pacific and South Korea, spoke to hundreds of children and teachers from local schools about Rolls-Royce’s commitment to STEM education and took part in a fun science experiment with some of the students. This was a hugely successful start to the SFF, with the talent and enthusiasm shown by the students setting the tone for the rest of the festival. Following the opening, film screenings continued across 55 cities in Indonesia where audiences were treated to 17 selected international films.

The SFF launch then moved north to Singapore, which is Rolls-Royce’s regional hub where our team of outstanding local talent work across our Civil Aerospace, Defence, Power Systems and Electrical businesses. The opening of the inaugural SFF in Singapore featured a ceremony and film screening enjoyed by children, parents and teachers from Glyph Community, who work to provide equitable education and learning programmes for youths across Singapore. Several screenings were also held throughout the festival period in conjunction with the Science Centre Singapore’s UNTAME festival, attracting over 7,700 viewers.

Further celebrations were held in Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines during November as the SFF opened across the region. In particular, the SFF Thailand, now in its 18th year, saw a return to pre-pandemic visitor numbers, recording over 530,000 viewers. We are thrilled that the festival has enabled us to reach a new generation of scientists and engineers that will be critical for the region’s continued economic growth and development.

The festival continued across Southeast Asia until mid-December, and we were delighted to help reach over 600,000 young people during the festival’s run.

Southeast Asia is one of the world’s fastest growing regions with huge potential for further economic development. Building a young and diverse pool of local science and engineering talent will be vital for the region’s continued economic success as it moves towards a sustainable future. It was therefore hugely encouraging to see students from all backgrounds and all countries take a deep interest in the STEM subjects.

The entirety of SFF 2022 featured 91 films from 27 countries, shown alongside a series of interactive workshops where students could discover the wonders of science first-hand. It was a great privilege to support so many students from all backgrounds to continue their educational journey, and everyone involved in this year’s SFF can be proud of what has been achieved.

As the SFF draws to a close, we come away feeling inspired about the future and more determined than ever to build a positive legacy through STEM education for the next generation.
