Delivering the power to protect for the Royal Thai Armed Forces

Rolls-Royce has a growing presence in Thailand and across the Defence business.

Our presence in Thailand dates back to the 1970s, beginning with the commissioning of the multi-purpose frigate HTMS Makut Rajakumarn. Since then, we have established an office in Bangkok and continue to develop strong relationships with key business and military customers in country, including the Royal Thai Air Force, Royal Thai Army, and the Royal Thai Navy. Working alongside the Thailand Board of Investment, we are identifying future opportunities to expand our manufacturing footprint in Thailand.

Louise Donaghey, Senior Vice President, South East Asia and India, Rolls-Royce, tells us more.

Delivering the power to protect land, air and sea

There are currently more than 60 engines in operation across the three branches of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. We help power a range of fixed wing and rotary aircrafts across transport and trainer categories, including the C-130, the Embraer Legacy and the Bell 206. Rolls-Royce’s specialist facilities also continue to supply overhaul services to the Royal Thai Armed Forces. We innovate continuously to improve our products through various technology upgrades. The Series 3.5 upgrade allows our T56 engines - used on C-130 aircrafts - to operate at greatly reduced temperatures. This results in lower maintenance costs and fuel savings for the customer.

Our Trent 500 engines proudly power the Royal Thai Air Force’s Airbus A340, which is currently being used as the VVIP aircraft for the royal family. We are also honoured to be powering other aircrafts for the transportation of Royal Thai Army and Royal Thai Navy personnel.

In the naval sector, Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B gas turbine engines power the multipurpose frigate, HTMS Makut Rajakumarn. We are well-positioned to support the Royal Thai Navy with our advanced product offerings across naval propulsion and support systems.

Continuing to innovate for Thailand’s future

Rolls-Royce has been at forefront of cutting-edge innovation for many decades and we continue to invest in advanced research and new technologies. Looking to the future, Rolls-Royce in Thailand will continue to work closely with the Royal Thai Armed Forces, supply chain vendors and the local industries and communities to attract the expertise and talent we need to provide the power to protect. Through the development of innovative technologies and continuous provision of through-life support for our customers’ fleets, we continue to deliver the cleanest, safest and most competitive solutions for our planet’s vital power needs.
