... those values inspired me to become a health and safety professional. While working in the steel industry, I’ve witnessed accidents that affected people’s lives. This further motivated me to become an expert in this field so that I can assure safety for everyone, every day, everywhere,” said Akhilesh Pandey, Head of Health, Safety, Environment and Well-Being, Asia-Pacific, Rolls-Royce.
Health and safety in the workplace will remain important issues today and tomorrow. Promoting safe and secure working environments for all workers is one of the key objectives in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals1. The International Labour Organisation also celebrates a century of improving occupational safety and health in 20192.
Challenges in ensuring employee’s health and safety will evolve in light of today’s Industry 4.0 and digital transformation. Disruptions in technology, demographic shifts and the rising importance of sustainability issues are forcing organisations to examine workplace safety seriously. Apart from implementing new technologies safely, organisations need to contend with issues such as managing risks in contractor activities, conducting assessments, dealing with diverse safety mindsets and complying with changing regulations.
Akhilesh explained, “The challenges we face in implementing a health and safety culture motivate us to be innovative and learn new aspects of health, safety and environment excellence.”
