Celebrating 40 years of collaboration with Sumitomo Precision Products

Sumitomo Precision Products (SPP) has been an important partner in the development and manufacture of Rolls-Royce aircraft engines since 1985. In addition to 2024 being Rolls-Royce’s 60th anniversary in Japan, this year also marks 40 years of collaboration with SPP.

From their headquarters in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, SPP is involved in the manufacture and maintenance of propeller-related equipment for Japan’s Ministry of Defense, the development of landing gear systems and thermal control systems for engines and air conditioning equipment, and in creating technology for the design and production of aircraft components. The company's thermal control systems are used in most of Rolls-Royce’s Trent engines, including the Trent 1000 and Trent XWB.

In November 2024, a ceremony was held at SPP’s headquarters to commemorate the anniversary. Rolls-Royce’s Group Chief Procurement Officer Neil Marsons, Senior Vice President of Procurement Iain James, Vice President of Supplier Management Nick Forrow and Rolls-Royce Japan President Susumu Kaminaga were in attendance. The day before the ceremony, the group visited the Besshi Copper Mine Memorial Museum in Niihama City, a historic site and birthplace of the Sumitomo Group, to more deeply understand SPP’s long history.

Rolls-Royce Group Chief Procurement Officer Neil Marsons and SPP Representative Director & Managing Executive Officer Mr. Masahiro Yamane exchanged commemorative plaques at the ceremony.

At the ceremony, Marsons remarked, “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to experience the history of the Sumitomo Group, and for their kind hospitality over the last two days. We have maintained a mutually beneficial relationship over the last 40 years and I believe we will continue this strong partnership for years to come.”

Kaminaga said, “We are honoured to have been partners with Sumitomo Precision Products for 40 years, and are grateful for the professionalism of everyone involved in the programme. We will continue to foster an excellent relationship as we move ahead towards our next milestone.”

After their speeches, the Rolls-Royce representatives took a commemorative photo with approximately 200 SPP members involved in development, manufacturing and sales, promising to work towards building an even better relationship and future for the two companies.
