Engineering the future together: Rolls-Royce and IIT Bombay forge new industry-academia collaboration

India’s technology and engineering ecosystem is rapidly evolving, backed by an increasing emphasis on indigenous capability development, especially given its vast pool of technology talent, a sound academic foundation and a maturing innovation culture. As the engineering demands deepen across sectors, a focus on supporting cutting-edge research and the ability to convert it into practical, scalable solutions is becoming a critical differentiator. This is where closer collaboration between academia and industry can become a key enabler of future-ready talent, applied innovation, and national competitiveness.

In this spirit, Rolls-Royce has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) to enable knowledge exchange and upskilling, and to explore opportunities to collaborate on joint projects in areas of mutual interest. As part of this, Rolls-Royce is happy to welcome students from IIT Bombay who have been selected for internship opportunities to work alongside the defence engineering team in Bengaluru.

The MOU was signed by Prof. Sachin C. Patwardhan (Dean R&D), IIT Bombay and Mr. G S Selwyn (Executive Vice President) of Rolls-Royce India, in the presence of Mr Alex Zino (Director Business Development and Future Programmes, UK and International) Rolls-Royce and senior representatives from both sides.

This partnership with IIT Bombay reflects our broader commitment to building strategic collaborations that advance shared ambitions in innovation, talent development and technology leadership. As we deepen our engagement in India, initiatives like this help unlock new opportunities to co-create solutions, through structured engagement between the academic and industrial ecosystems. We look forward to knowledge-sharing opportunities with the experienced academics and faculty at IIT Bombay.”
