Why I chose to be an engineer

Growing up in a golden age watching engineering and technological evolution – from landlines to cell phones, telegrams to WhatsApp, CRTs to ARs, propellers to jets – I wanted to contribute towards the betterment of society. Also, watching my family work in the technology domain was a big inspiration for me to take up engineering. I believe that as engineers, we are constantly contributing towards changing the world with new inventions and discoveries. Working closely with customers at Rolls-Royce has not only allowed me to see the direct impact of our innovation first-hand, but also to receive feedback directly from the source.

Each one of us has our own desire that since childhood. Ever since I was a kid, I was amazed with aeroplanes as a flying machine, and always had respect for people who had been involved with its design. Growing up with engineers at home, I realised that being an engineer would give me an opportunity to learn more about these machines. The best part of being an engineer is that it is the fun in learning new things every day as we keep up with technology. Engineering is a field that solves the most challenging problems in the world. As engineers, we are constantly changing the world with inventions and solutions with useful benefits for everyone’s lives. Being an engineer is being creative. The best part is creating something new from nothing and seeing it running in the real world.

There are some people who still grow up thinking that engineering and science aren’t meant for women. I chose engineering because I wanted to prove that women can work and contribute as effectively as men.

The other major reason is that engineering skills are valuable throughout your life and are not only limited to solving any engineering problem. It is ever challenging and exciting as it demands you to think out of the box.

As an engineer, one day I would personally like to develop more feasible solutions to generate clean energy and work towards sustainable living.

As a child, I was always fascinated by the work my father (an engineer) did as an industrialist. Huge machinery like cranes and the UTM (Universal Testing Machine), which he and his colleagues worked with every day always excited and intrigued me. I have been inspired by engineering, its prospects and applications from childhood. I have always loved mathematics and physics, which made engineering a very clear choice. The broad spectrum of applications that engineering provides to solve the everyday problems as well as the more complex problems, using a blend of creativity and scientific processes, makes engineering a very attractive field to be in.

It was my father’s dream to have his children educated, so that we could be independent. Coming from a farming background, my parents’ dreams for me in spite of their struggles are the biggest inspiration and motivation to be an engineer and support them with technology which can reduce their workload. I chose to be an engineer because it is challenging, and it is changing fast, and also because I can witness it in my day-to-day life. I enjoy discovering engineering – and solutions - in each and every small thing that happens in our daily routine.
