Developing the Next Generation

Developing the next generation

At Rolls-Royce, we’re committed to pioneering the critical power and propulsion technologies in support of the UK’s advanced future combat air capability.

Working in partnership with Team Tempest industry partners, BAE Systems, Leonardo UK and MBDA, along with the UK MoD, we are developing affordable and highly capable solutions that will deliver the future operational requirements of the UK’s Royal Air Force.

Building a Foundation for the Future – A National Endeavour

From our Defence Headquarters in Bristol, UK, our Future Programmes team is pioneering ground-breaking power and propulsion system technology that will be more powerful, more electric and more sustainable than ever before.  We’re also transforming how we work, ensuring we will design and manufacture more efficiently and cost effectively, driving higher productivity by adopting novel Agile working practices and accelerating a cutting-edge Digital First programme. And, as true pioneers, we are focussed on are developing technology that will also play a fundamental role in enabling and even accelerating the overall global transition of a net zero carbon future.

The success of the UK’s future sovereign capability is dependent on developing and nurturing the skills and talent needed to fulfil its defence ambitions.  In conjunction with Team Tempest partners, and through the UK’s Future Combat Air System programme, a wide range of highly skilled roles are being created to help develop a vital generation of talent.  At Rolls-Royce, we are achieving this through upskilling and continuous development of our existing workforce, apprenticeship/graduate programmes and many other high value roles.  By March 2023, we expect to have recruited 700 personnel into our Future Programmes team in Bristol, UK.

Being You, Being Rolls-Royce

As pioneers, we have the chance to shape and improve the world we live in. We love solving complex problems and we achieve this by listening to all the diverse perspectives of our teammates. We will innovate and power the world by enabling all our people to be at their best for each other, our business and our customers, helping us to remain the world-class engineering company that we are today.

In Bristol, our Future Programmes team is committed to creating workplaces where our people feel included.  The way we behave each day can make people around us feel included or excluded and we ensure everyone joining our team understands how Diversity & Inclusion is an integral part of our culture through our induction programmes.

Code First Girls

Fresh perspectives are important and we need them.  A more diverse workforce means we have a wider variety of skills, viewpoints and experiences.  We can’t tackle new challenges by working in the same old ways: in order to deliver our customers’ digital goals it is absolutely critical that we embrace change and are bold in our thinking.

Rolls-Royce is partnering with an external company, Code First Girls, to create an opportunity for external candidates to develop their Data Science knowledge. The aim is that by July 2023 a cohort of 15 women or non-binary people will join teams across our Future Programmes involved in the design and development of next generation products and technologies. These candidates will carry out a Code For Girls nanodegree; spending 12 weeks learning about scientific data processing, modelling and evaluation as well as analytic libraries and packages.

This new talent pipeline has been created to ensure that we will have a pool of talented individuals with the skills necessary to tackle our customers’ challenges.

Supporting Early Careers in Tempest

Tempest Early Careers Network (TECN) is an initiative that has been established to break down the barriers of communication between the Tempest partners (Rolls-Royce, MBDA, Leonardo, MOD and BAE Systems) at the early careers level.  Members working within the Future Combat Air Systems programme, across industry, can work on transformational projects which will have a positive impact on the programme.

TECN is a fantastic resource offering many benefits to its members, for example:

  • It provides early careers across the Tempest Enterprise the opportunity to meet similar minded people
  • It offers a space to share experiences, insights and opportunities to implement fresh ideas into the programme
  • It helps to create career enduring relationships
  • It enables network members to build critical skills required for collaboration and developing relationships

Tempest Mentoring Scheme

The Tempest Mentoring Scheme was launched by a cohort of the Tempest Early Careers Network (TECN) to share tacit knowledge throughout Team Tempest, creating networking links between the Tempest leaders of the future. The scheme encourages a common culture and invigorates collaboration into the future of the Tempest programme, with both the mentor and mentee gaining knowledge from the two-way relationship.
