Our approach

Rolls-Royce seeks to be ‘trusted to deliver excellence’ in all that it does. We operate under a publicly available Global Code of Business Ethics and view corporate responsibility as a fundamental and integral part of the company’s business strategy.

As a power systems company our primary contribution to sustainability is to develop technologies and products with an increasingly lower environmental impact. We have the capability to respond to several of the major environmental challenges, through the provision of low-emissions, low-carbon and renewable energy solutions.

The challenges posed by climate change must be addressed by a proper understanding of the science. This will require a combination of technology, the ability to execute industrial scale solutions, public policy and regulations. This means industry, governments, academia and society working together in order to effect changes in both behaviour and energy use.

As a business it is possible for us to meet the needs of our shareholders, employees and customers as we develop products and services that benefit society and reduce environmental impact. We pay the highest attention to product responsibility, supported by our product safety management system. Our business involves “through life service”, which encourages responsible “life-cycle” thinking and prudent use of resources. As the original equipment manufacturer, Rolls-Royce is best placed to provide service support, long-term product care and well planned maintenance on behalf of customers.

Case study: TotalCare

In order to continue to meet the needs of our stakeholders and, in doing so, contribute to developments that benefit society, we manage our business by integrating aspects of sustainable development. Our business operates through:

  • effective workplace management, creating the conditions for world-class performance, built on measures such as safe and healthy workplaces, protecting the environment, diversity, training and development and attracting and retaining talent; driving business success through our people and by applying our standards;
  • having processes in place to manage the impacts of our operations on local communities on entering, operating and leaving; maximising the positive impacts, such as job creation and community investment, whilst preventing and mitigating the negative impacts such as noise and odour;
  • having measures in place to develop fair and ethical requirements within our supply chain, including acceptable workplace management standards, environmental performance and risk/business continuity management and;
  • choosing to conduct our business ethically and responsibly, thereby retaining our ‘licence to operate’ and reducing the risks of having obligations imposed upon us; we manage our risks and have systems in place to restore order if unexpected things happen.

By taking all the above measures into account, we are well placed to help deliver more sustainable solutions. This will be achieved by operating responsibly and providing the critical building blocks of a modern society: affordable power and propulsion systems with reduced environmental impact.
