Challenges & opportunities

The world faces a number of significant societal and environmental challenges. The economic development required to drive social improvement is dependent on the provision of clean, reliable and affordable energy. This in turn can be converted into vital services such as transport, heating and lighting that are the building blocks of a modern society. A   principal environmental threat to creating a more sustainable world is enhanced climate change linked to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, although air quality issues are also important.

The most important man-made GHG is carbon dioxide, which is also making the oceans more acidic, a further serious concern, with potentially widespread negative consequences.  These environmental issues call for a rapid transformation of how energy is produced and used, together with changes to significant industrial processes, as well as agriculture and forestry. Making these changes to permit growth globally, and at the same time reduce GHG emissions, will require industry, governments and society to work together. Rolls-Royce is determined to make an effective response to these environmental concerns.
