EFE will validate engine technologies in
the increasingly important area of environmental performance
- delivering significant reductions in carbon dioxide and
nitrous oxide emissions and engine noise - to move future
engines closer towards goals established by the Advisory
Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE). These
seek to achieve (by 2020, based on a 2000 datum):
- A 50 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions
- 20 per cent from engines alone
- An 80 per cent reduction in emissions of nitrous oxides
- A halving of perceived noise levels
The EFE programme is aimed at developing UK aerospace capabilities
in the following fundamental technologies:
- High temperature materials
- High efficiency turbine components
- Low emissions combustion
- Advanced manufacturing technologies
- Engine controls and actuation technologies
- Nacelle aerodynamic technologies
