Tiered suppliers to these partners (including
small and medium sized enterprises) are critical to EFE
and the full value chain needs to collaborate to achieve
the programme objectives. This diversity will allow cross-sectoral
knowledge transfer and innovation as well as yielding benefits
such as an affordable and sustainable air transport system
to society at large.
The development of a competitive aero engine is a long
process, initiated by acquiring cutting-edge technology
through research and technology programmes in a wide range
of engineering disciplines. These unproven innovations need
to be at a sufficiently low risk before they can be included
in a product design, and we do this by using a representative
demonstrator vehicle as part of the technology validation
process. Only after successful technology validation can
we consider a specific product design and verification programme
for an engine entering service.
