Aerospace is the UK's most competitive manufacturing
sector, and a leader in technology development. It acts
as a stimulus for growth and generates a substantial balance
of trade surplus.
As part of the UK's National Aerospace Technology Strategy
(NATS), the Aerospace Innovation Growth Team (AeIGT) initiative
looks to see the UK offering, by 2022; "a global aerospace
industry in the world's most innovative and productive location,
leading to a sustainable growth for all its stakeholders".
Six Aerospace Technology Validation Programmes (ATVPs)
and 12 Aerospace Innovation Networks (AINs) have been created
to target these objectives, and the Environmentally Friendly
Engine (EFE) is one of the ATVPs. Rolls-Royce is programme
lead, with Bombardier Aerospace (Northern Ireland), Goodrich
Engine Control Systems (West Midlands), HS Marston (Wolverhampton)
and Smiths (Burnley) as the industrial partners.
The Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Sheffield, Loughborough,
Birmingham and Queens Belfast are the academic partners
in EFE.
