Noise reduction

Rolls-Royce has been researching low-noise aero-engine technology for the past 40 years. Significant progress has been made in reducing aircraft noise and we are maintaining good progress towards achieving the ACARE goal.

With partners, we are addressing both the direct noise generation from engines and the perceived noise impact on the ground.

Future engine concepts are in line with the ACARE goals. Implementing these designs whilst achieving step-change reductions in CO2 and NOx represents a substantial challenge.

Progress towards reaching the ACARE goals

Graph: % noise reduction targets (corrected for aircraft weight, all figures are indicative). 1995: Trent 895, 0; 2002: Trent 500, -2.5; 2003: Trent 900, -3.5; 2007: Trent 1000, -4.5; 2020: ACARE goal, -10 (to be obtained through intake and exhaust improvement).
