The Group's approach

We believe strongly that Rolls-Royce has a vital role to play by contributing to a better understanding of the science on which environmental policies and regulations should be based and also by exploring and implementing new technological solutions.

We recognise these key environmental challenges and are committed to finding solutions.

We are proud of our environmental track record both in our operations and in the performance of our products. Rolls-Royce retained its position for the fifth consecutive year in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, recognising the Group's position as amongst the best in class for addressing a broad range of sustainability issues. In the 2006 Business in the Environment Index Rolls-Royce was once again placed in first position in the Aerospace and Defence sector and, with a score of 99.3 per cent, achieved platinum status in the index.

Solutions

As a world-class engineering organisation,
Rolls-Royce has the scientific and technical knowledge to inform the public debate and help society develop an effective response to environmental issues in general and to climate change in particular.

The key solutions have to be implemented on an industrial scale in many sectors if they are to be effective. These will include a combination of radical technology changes and improved efficiency in both the production and use of all forms of energy.

We will continue to work closely with our customers, industry partners and other stakeholders. The Group is represented on a range of national and international bodies active on environmental issues, such as the Society of British Aerospace Companies, the CBI Climate Change Task Force, the Sustainable Aviation Council, the Air Transport Action Group, the International Civil Aviation Organisation's Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) and the Global Round Table on Climate Change.
