Rolls-Royce congratulates US Navy on christening of USS Zumwalt, first DDG 1000 multi mission destroyer

On Saturday April 12, 2014, Rolls-Royce congratulated the US Navy on the christening of the USS Zumwalt, the first of its new and highly sophisticated DDG 1000 multi-mission destroyer class of ship. The 600 foot long all-electric ship was christened by sponsors Ann Zumwalt and Mouzetta Zumwalt-Weathers at Bath Iron Works in Maine during a ceremony attended by thousands of people, including The Honorable Ray Mabus, the Secretary of the Navy, and other dignitaries.

During the ceremony Don Roussinos, Rolls-Royce, President - Naval said: "Rolls-Royce congratulates the US Navy on the christening of its most technologically advanced - and first all-electric - multi mission destroyer class of ship.

"Rolls-Royce is proud to be part of a team that is providing the US Navy with the most efficient and reliable power generation systems for current and future ship programs. Modern multi mission destroyers like the USS Zumwalt DDG 1000 have high power demands, not just for propulsion systems but also for tomorrow's air and missile defense radars, missile systems and directed energy weapon systems. By combining our newly certified MT5S ATGs (auxiliary turbine generator sets) with our well proven MT30 MTGs (main turbine gensets) - the most powerful in the world - Rolls-Royce is able to deliver a highly survivable Integrated Power System that provides 100% of the electrical power aboard this and future Zumwalt class multi-mission destroyers."

Rolls-Royce scope of supply on the USS Zumwalt includes two Main Turbine Gensets, generating 36MW each, and two Auxiliary Turbine Gensets, generating 4MW each, providing a total of 80 MW for total ship power, in addition to the fixed pitch propellers.

Rolls-Royce recently secured American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) / Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification for the MT5S engine and RR4500 genset for use on the USS Zumwalt, becoming the only engine and genset recognized for power generation in this class of US Navy surface combatants.

For future programs the up-rated version of the engine, MT5S-HE+, is under development for use on the DDG 51 Flight III class guided missile destroyers. This will continue Rolls-Royce's position as a key supplier of gas turbine gensets in use on US Navy surface combatants.

The Indianapolis Gas Turbine Group of Rolls-Royce Marine North America led the design effort and conducted the test at the packaging facility, General Tool Company in Cincinnati. The engine is manufactured by Rolls-Royce Corporation in Indianapolis.

These business segments address markets with two strong technology platforms, gas turbines and reciprocating engines, for use on land, at sea and in the air.

Rolls-Royce currently has 50% ownership of Rolls- Royce Power Systems (RRPS), a collaboration with Daimler AG. RRPS was fully consolidated in the results of Rolls-Royce Holdings plc for the first time in 2013. On 7 March, 2014, Daimler announced their intention to exercise their put option to sell their 50% share in RRPS to Rolls- Royce Holdings plc.
  3. Rolls-Royce has customers in more than 120 countries, comprising more than 380 airlines and leasing customers, 160 armed forces, 4,000 marine customers, including 70 navies, and 1,600 energy and nuclear customers.

  5. Annual underlying revenue was £15.5 billion in 2013, around half of which came from the provision of aftermarket services. The firm and announced order book stood at £71.6 billion at 31 December 2013.
  6. In 2013, Rolls-Royce invested £1.1 billion on research and development. We also support a global network of 31 University Technology Centres, which position Rolls-Royce engineers with the forefront of scientific research.
  7. Rolls-Royce employs over 55,000 people in 45 countries. Over 17,000 of these are engineers.
  8. The Group has a strong commitment to apprentice and graduate recruitment and to further developing employee skills. In 2013 we employed 379 graduates and 288 apprentices through our worldwide training programmes.
