Qantas A380 arrival marks Rolls-Royce Trent 900 debut in North America

The first commercial flight of the Rolls-Royce Trent 900-powered Airbus A380 to North America, operated by Australia’s flag carrier, Qantas, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) today.
Chris Cyr, Executive Vice President, Airlines – Americas, Rolls-Royce, said: “We are delighted to celebrate the arrival of the first A380 commercial flight powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 in North America. In addition to meeting fuel efficiency requirements, the Trent 900 has the lowest overall emissions for the A380, and will therefore provide Qantas with superior operating economics on the long-haul routes for which these aircraft are intended.”
David Cox, Executive General Manager, Qantas Engineering, said: “Qantas is proud to be the first airline to operate commercial A380 services between Australia and the US West Coast.
“We are also pleased that this has been achieved using the Trent 900 which offers us an effective economic solution and operational efficiency as well as low engine noise and emissions.”
Although the Trent 900 is the largest and one of the most powerful engines Rolls-Royce has built, it was designed to minimize environmental impact. The engines operate well within the requirements of all current and proposed legislation on emissions and the Trent-powered A380 comfortably meets the chapter 4 noise regulations for airports such as LAX and London Heathrow, which has one of the most stringent regulations.
This month marks the first anniversary of the Trent 900-powered A380 entry into service. During this first year of operation, the Trent 900 has accumulated over 56,000 in-service flying hours with more than 8,000 engine cycles. Last month, Qantas Airways ordered Trent 900 engines to power eight additional Airbus A380s in a deal valued at more than $575 million, bringing its Rolls-Royce powered 380 fleet to 20 aircraft.
Rolls-Royce leads the global market in engines for new generation wide-body aircraft, with a 50 per cent share. The Trent 900 is the engine of choice on the A380, having been selected by ten of the 13 Airbus A380 operators who have made an engine selection, resulting in a market-leading 58 per cent share of firm and option A380 orders.
- Qantas currently operates a fleet of 43 Rolls-Royce powered aircraft, including 32 RB211-powered aircraft: 21 Boeing 747-400s, four 747-300s, and seven Boeing 767-300ERs, plus 11 BR715-powered Boeing 717s.
- The Trent 900 has been developed with partners around the world. Seven companies are risk and revenue-sharing partners: Industria de Turbo Propulsores (ITP) of Spain, Hamilton Sundstrand, Goodrich and Honeywell of the United States, Avio of Italy, Volvo Aero of Sweden, and Marubeni of Japan. In addition, Samsung Techwin of South Korea, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) of Japan are program associates.
- The Trent 900 is the fourth member of the Trent family of engines that Rolls-Royce has produced since the original Trent 700 first flew on the A330 in 1995.

- Rolls-Royce is continually improving the environmental impact of its products. Each year Rolls-Royce, in collaboration with its partners, invests around £800 million on research and development, two thirds of which has the objective of reducing the environmental impact of its products. This technology investment is primarily aimed at reducing noise and emissions.
Trent 900 Facts:
- take-off, the A380’s four Trents are delivering thrust equivalent to the power of more than 3,500 family cars.
- Each of the 70 high pressure turbine blades in a Trent 900 produces about 900hp (670 kw)….more power than a Formula One racing car.
- If you applied the high-pressure turbine blade cooling technology to an ice cube, you could put it in an oven at 200°C and it would never melt.
- The 116-inch fan operates at nearly 3,000 rpm which means the blade tips are travelling at about 1,000mph (1,600 km/h) or about 1.3 times the speed of sound.
