Optimised Systems and Solutions Inc. (OSyS) is to assist Qatar Airways to further improve its fuel efficiency and establish effective emissions monitoring, reporting and verifications (MRV) to meet emissions trading scheme (ETS) requirements. Qatar Airways is a new customer for OSyS.
This activity will be conducted in the OSyS optimisation center – established as part of the recent tenancy agreement among Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), Rolls-Royce and OSyS – within the QSTP, with support from OSyS in Derby, England.
As Qatar Airways continues to invest heavily in new, modern and cleaner aircraft, it is making a concerted effort to achieve and maintain minimum carbon emissions and reduce the impact on the environment. The fuel usage analysis, management and optimisation OSyS will provide for Qatar Airways’ fleet of more than 76 aircraft will advance that effort. OSyS’ ETS MRV solution will not only assist in achieving that goal, but will also provide a foundation for Qatar Airways’ work with the Aviation Global Deal Group and the International Air Transport Association toward establishing a global policy concerning aviation emissions.
OSyS’ solutions also support Qatar Airways’ corporate social responsibility program “The Oryx Flies Green” as part of identifying and initiating enhancements that reduce fuel consumption and carbon footprint.
Fuel management and optimisation allows airlines to drive operational efficiencies in terms of fuel usage, mitigate environmental impact and measure improvement initiatives. Emissions monitoring, reporting and verification enables effective deployment of plans and preparation for implementation as airlines face inclusion in trading schemes such as the European Union ETS. Beyond meeting those initial requirements, OSyS’ advanced ETS solutions provide the next steps to cost optimization and long-term decision support regarding carbon-credit trading.
“As one of the fastest growing airlines in the world, we recognise our responsibility to ensure that our carbon footprint remains as low as possible to help make the world a safer and cleaner place,” said Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker. “OSyS’ fuel management and optimisation solution was a best-fit answer to support the goal of carbon-neutral growth that is integral to our ‘The Oryx Flies Green’ program.”
“The OSyS solution will enable Qatar Airways to gain greater control over fuel usage and advance their emissions compliance preparations,” said Andy Hutson-Smith, senior vice president – Middle East Operations for OSyS. “Our services help reduce operational expense and emissions, realise additional fuel gains and identify new savings opportunities, delivering competitive advantage to our customer. We are pleased to assist Qatar Airways, not only in increasing their operational performance and competitive position, but also in their commitment to go beyond current industry best practices to reach their final goal – carbon-neutral growth.”
This is just one of a series of OSyS initiatives in the region, leveraging tenancy in the Qatar Science and Technology Park. Working closely with local academics and industry, including Qatar Airways, OSyS is leading the Rolls-Royce initiative to establish a research, training and development program in support of Qatar’s mission to create a hub for technology development, education and research in the region.
The activities undertaken by Rolls-Royce and OSyS will enable development of core skills and partnerships that are critical to developing a competitive and diversified economy for Qatar.
